June 24, 2008 - Ottawa, Canada - Welcome to the premier and commemorative edition of "St. John Now" e-newsletter! Today, in communities across Canada, St. John Ambulance celebrates 125 years of helping Canadians improve their health, safety and quality of life by providing community services and first aid training.

Now, with more than 22,000 volunteers, St. John Ambulance is one of Canada's leading charities and largest volunteer-based organizations. These volunteers, together with our 6,000 first aid instructors and 470 employees, offer a level of dedication and service that is best measured in the million lives that are touched each year and by an astounding two million hours of volunteer time devoted to communities across Canada.

Everyday there are stories about how the programs of St. John Ambulance have changed lives, made communities stronger and safer, and helped ordinary people do extraordinary things. Sudbury, Ontario - Reading Tails is a new six-week program that has been designed for children between the ages of 6 and 11 years. The first pilot program began in Sudbury in April of 2007, with five teams and 10 children participating. The children improve their reading skills in 20-minute sessions with the companionship of a certified St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog. It has been found that when a therapy dog is listening, the environment is transformed and a child's dread is replaced by eager anticipation which allows learning to occur. The children also make enormous strides in their reading and communication skills while building self-esteem, confidence and social skills. Read More»
