Spring into Action
New on the block...

We are regularly asked where is next on the adventure travel hot list? Unlike when we started pioneering the first treks through the Karakoram Mountains in the early 1980's there are very few areas in the world left unexplored. Nowadays its usually political changes which open or close new areas. Last year we lost the dramatic desert trekking in Libya but gained wonderful countries like Burma and Colombia, which came out of their political wilderness. Below are a few stories from these areas.

Hope you enjoy reading this month's newsletter - thanks for your time!

What do our clients think?

It's almost exactly a year since KE decided to set up our first adventure holiday in Burma and this has proved to be a resounding success. We have virtually full groups for all our 2012 departures and we will be offering other holidays in Burma in the future. We thought it an appropriate time to ask one of the clients, Vanda Tillotson, from our first Temples and Trails of Burma trip to answer a few questions about her experiences in this mystical land. Click on the link below to get Vanda's full reply.

Is now a good time to visit Burma?

Now is the best time to visit Burma - before it gets turned into a tourist destination that loses it's soul and..........

Would you like to return to Burma?

Very much.  The people are delightful, open and friendly, the landscape is beautiful and the hospitality............

Tree Planting in Peru

Paul Cripps' Story

A recent visitor to our office was Paul Cripps.  Originally from Wales, Paul and his young family now live in Cusco, where he runs an excellent agency that handles several of our Peruvian adventures, including Choquequirao to Machu Picchu, the exciting Multi-Activity Peru, the Lake Titicaca to Machu Picchu bike ride and our Land of the Incas family adventure. Environmental issues are very important to Paul and he has a pet project that involves re-establishing significant areas of native forest in and around the Lares Valley. Since 1997, Paul and his friends and associates have planted 170,000 trees and he has an ambitious target of one million trees by 2020. KE and our partner charity, the Juniper Trust contributed £1000 towards a tree planting session that took place at Huiloc in December 2011. Have a look at his great video on tree planting.

Viva Colombia!

The Essence of Adventure Travel

Emerging from a period of political uncertainty, Colombia was another exciting new destination for KE in 2011. Our first trek into Colombia's Sierra Nevada del Cocuy was a little rough around the edges, but our ground agent soon learned how to do things the KE way and got it just right for our second departure. That's the way it is with adventure travel.... looking back to the early 80's we had to go through exactly the same process in Pakistan's Karakoram Mountains. Colombia produces excellent coffee and fantastically colourful flowers. Football is a national passion and each year the country manages to turn out some pretty legendary road cyclists. But above all that, it's an adventure travel destination that we can heartily recommend. It's refreshing to be able to find places where distinctive cultures remain intact and there are high mountain trails and peaks to explore that have seen very few outside visitors.

Win 2 tickets for the Salomon Evening

With just 10 weeks to the start of the KMF, we recommend that those of you looking for a classic Lake District experience should sign up for a guided walk with either Cameron McNeish or Pete Royall. In addition to their other admirable qualities, each of these grumpy old mountain men can lay claim to a wealth of experience of KE adventures - which they will be happy to pass on. Cameron has led the Ultimate Everest Trek, Turkey's Mount Ararat ascent, Jordan's Dana to Petra Trek, Morocco's Across the High Atlas, amongst others. For Pete, it's more a question of what he hasn't led, but obvious standouts include Pakistan's Gondoro La, the Stok Kangri ascent in Ladakh and Poland's High Tatras Trek.

Tickets for the Salomon Evening (Wed 16 May) with talks on Trail Running and Mountaineering cost £14. We have 2 to give away. To claim your prize, simply answer this question... Which 'Wainwright Walk' is Pete leading on 16 May? Submit your answer here. Congratulations to David and Anna, the 2 winners of last month's Sportive competition!

The very best of the Lycian Way

This year, we changed the emphasis of our Lycian Way trek, which now picks out the highlights of Turkeys's classic Turquoise Coast hike. Starting in the west at Oludeniz, we include a boat trip to Kekova Island, hike to picturesque Cape Gelidonia and see lots of timeless villages, ancient ruins, hidden bays and deserted beaches. With 3 nights at Fethiye and 2 at Andrasan, we have kept changes of hotels to a minimum and the format of the holiday means that you will carry just a small day-sack. If you are looking for a relaxed, fully inclusive, walking holiday, with traditional Turkish hospitality and great food, this one is now even better value at just £695 Land Only.
