How to spot a liar in an interview
EthicsDid you ever wonder to yourself, "Could this person be real?" during an interview.  If so, congratulations- you are paying attention to your internal cues and that makes you a highly advanced interviewer. Many hiring managers are so busy talking about the position, the company (and themselves) that they miss the subtle red flags that pop up with candidates that are not being truthful about their skills, experience, and work history. And when it comes to accomplished liars, subtle hints are all you are going to get.

Here are some tips to help root out the liars before they join your company:

Don't let your mind make excuses for people. Do not say, "Well, everyone lies on a resume." Or, "Sure, he is stretching the truth a little, but at least he is creative." Are you really willing to take the risk that experience is the only thing this person is lying to you about? Look for people who are stable, eager and a good fit for the company. These things are more important than experience anyway.

Have a system. Your organization needs a consistent process that will let candidates demonstrate their ability to follow-through and show you their true level of interest. But at the same time, they will be showing you many other things about themselves--if you are paying attention. Your recruitment process can consist of multiple interviews, written questions, assignments, personality profiles, reference checks, etc. Often times within this process inconsistencies will reveal themselves and allow you to investigate further or eliminate the candidate before you make a hiring mistake.
