I happened to catch singer Michael Buble' on the Oprah show one day and then singer Harry Connick Jr. on The Letterman show the same week. They sing in the same musical genre, are both handsome, endearing gents with remarkably unique voices. A cynical person would say that one of them is unnecessary. Are you a Harry Connick or a Michael Buble'? We have grown accustomed to Harry's unique voice over the years and he is leading a more settled life now with a wife and children. Harry is not new! Buble' is broodingly handsome and dating a supermodel from South America, making all the talk show rounds to promote his new album and his voice is like silky caramel. Wouldn't it be easier for a Harry Connick Jr. to just give up and let the new, exciting "product" have his day? Heck no! If Harry is feeling threatened it certainly does not show. He is funny and engaging and he sings too! By my count he has produced 27 albums and has collaborated with countless musical greats. He is a talented actor (Hope Floats, Will & Grace etc.) and his compassion and big name connections raised millions of dollars for Katrina victims. Harry is an establishment. Are you competing for a big account, a new job, or convincing your clients not to go over to the "new" product on the market? If so, it is important to know your competition but more important to know who you are and what your brand has to offer. Remind yourself what makes you unique and valuable and focus on those aspects. |
