It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead. ...Miracle Max in the movie The Princess Bride
I once had the pleasure of working at the same company as world-renowned health and fitness expert Dr. Daniel Kosich. One of the strategies he taught was the 90/10 rule when it came to food and exercise.
"Do the right thing 90% of the time and then do as you please 10% of the time" was the general concept.
This fantastic strategy translates well into the business world because it is how we behave and perform most of the time that adds up to success or failure.
So you were late, had a bad sales month, missed a deadline or overdrew your checking account. If you are mostly on time, then apologize and move on. If you missed a deadline, or overdrew your account, but you rarely do, then deal with the consequences and let it go. Nobody is perfect! If, on the other hand, you are chronically late or missing your sales target regularly, then that is your red flag to make some serious changes because it is how we behave most of the time that tends to determine our outcomes.
This counts for emotions too!
Nearly everyone in this current business climate has a moment of fear for the future or a feeling of panic. If it is a rare event, then give into it and let it have its moment-and then move yourself back to the business of doing business. But, if you have become a gloom-and-doomer, you need to change things up and get yourself turned around fast. Chances are you are mostly safe, mostly successful and mostly smart enough to figure this out. |
