What if the candidate you like best lives in another state and would need to relocate in order to work for you? Or what if this career would be a dramatic and untested industry change for the candidate, like going from law to aerospace?
It's all about timing!
First of all, it is important to remember that oftentimes new jobs come in the midst of life changes. They can go hand in hand. The question is whether or not this particular life transition for this particular candidate is going to clash with the timing of this particular opening.
On one hand, people in transition can bring a certain zeal and enthusiasm to the job that "regular" candidates might not possess. Your company could be the benefactor of a clarity and focus that come with the desire to start a new life. On the other hand, if the candidate cancels the moving truck at the last minute or takes the job in their former industry two weeks after they have started with your company, you are going to feel pretty bad and will have wasted weeks or months of time and resources. The best way to know for sure is to put the onus on the candidate to prove to you that the timing is perfect for them. Ask for a business plan, a moving plan and/or have them do some research that will make you feel more certain about this major change. Then, wait and see what happens.
