Which Site is Best for My Job Ad?
Monster? CareerBuilder? Yahoo!? FitnessJobs? craigslist?
The list goes on.
Having worked with most of the major (and minor) sites and having compared all of the features and benefits of each, I have come to the conclusion that your decision should be based more on temperament than budget. For example, if you feel it is wrong or silly to have to pay for ads, and you are willing to invest time, then go with one of the many free sites like craigslist or LinkedIn. craigslist has rules and limits which dictate that you can only place one ad and that you cannot refresh that ad daily, etc., and LinkedIn is more of a social, professional networking site—but they are both effective as long as you are willing to invest time and take your chances on the results you get.
It’s Great to Have Choices
If you are willing to spend a modest amount of money—and want to increase your chances of getting applicants— then consider using Yahoo! or a site specific to either your industry, like www.fitnessjobs.com (fitness, salon and spa industry), or your locale, like jobbing.com. They are all popular, easy to navigate and not terribly expensive—and, most importantly, they are very effective. When weighing your options on similar sites make sure they are somewhat known in your industry or locale as you need a site with which candidates are already familiar.
If your temperament is more the type to want the “big daddy” of sites, then go with Monster or a site like TheLadders ($100K jobs or more only). The costs are significantly higher than other sites, but usually they offer extra features like national advertising or access to pre-screened applicants, and they usually offer to send notifications to both candidates and clients. Make sure that you do indeed want these extra features because you will be paying for them. Or, of course you can just hire a great recruiter and not have to worry yourself with all of this silly ad business—but that’s another story.
