Making Productive Use of Powerful Emotions at Work

Coaching MinuteSomehow emotions got a bad reputation in the business world yet emotion is a powerful part of our humanity and can actually be very productive—if used properly. Here are a few uses to get you started:

Happiness, Joy & Elation: If you are feeling great, have just closed a huge deal or sold your house in a bidding war the key word here is MOMENTUM. Use that happiness to make calls, try for that big client or write that presentation you have been stalling on. You can conjure up the joy for celebration part later—for now, let the natural momentum of your success carry you into uncharted territory.

Anger, Frustration & Annoyance: If you are really mad then it might be time to clean your office, organize the file room or even clean out the nasty microwave in the break room. Anger often comes from a feeling of lack of control over a situation so take some control over objects (no throwing) and see how you feel in two hours.

e·mo·tion (n) a mental state that arises spontaneously rather than through conscious effort and is often accompanied by physiological changes; a feeling: the emotions of joy, sorrow, reverence, hate, and love.
