Dear Friends of Lewis & Clark, New and Better Bookstore: The bookstore on the website is entirely redone. It is now an Amazon aStore, and it is very easy for me to add book and DVD titles for anything sold through Amazon. If you recommend it, I'll add it. Just send me an email. I think is a very handy to gather all these titles together in different categories.
Help Support the Website: If you enter Amazon through the Lewis and Clark Road Trips aStore, any products you buy from Amazon, will earn a little money for me. It doesn't have to be a product I have listed. It's a way you can help, without any cost to you.
Question: Would you like for me to add used (out of print) books that are sold through Amazon? A lot of books that I like are no longer available as new books.
Reviewers Wanted: If you want to write reviews, please let me know. Amazon would also be delighted to have your reviews.
New and Better Calendar of Events: You might not notice the difference, but I do behind the scenes. Keep me informed.
Featured Booksellers: Book sellers are now listed on the home page of Lewis and Clark Road Trips as well as in this newsletter. It's free advertising. Are you selling Lewis and Clark Road Trips and your store isn't listed? Let me know. The links always get click throughs.
FeedBurner: We have switched to FeedBurner for your RSS feeds. If you want to follow my blogs by having them come directly to your RSS feed format, subscribe or re-subscribe through FeedBurner. My web developer tells me it will provide more accurate statistics.
***************************************** Retail Orders: It's time to stock up on the Lewis and Clark Road Trips!
Free pages available to book sellers (and LCTHF chapters) I got a request from the Mississippi Crafts Center, which has relocated to just off the Natchez Trace, to supply them with facing pages from the Road Trips book for their area. I saved out some unbound pages when the books were printed, and I will be happy to send out a packet of pages to any book seller who requests them. First come, first served. I think it's a great idea! I can also send PDFs of the pages.

Unknown portraits of Lewis and Clark found
|

Meriwether Lewis: The sketch of Meriwether Lewis was reproduced in The Daily American newspaper of Nashville on September 6, 1891. It accompanied an article on the death of Meriwether Lewis. The article was subtitled "The accepted theory of suicide Discredited in Lewis County--Old Residents say he was murdered--One Who Heard the Fatal Shot." The article stated the sketch was in the possesion of "his fellow traveler, Gov. Clark, who considers it an excellent likeness and prizes it highly." It was originally published a "rare old periodical called the Alalectic Magazine and Navy Chronicle in Philadelphia in 1816."
William Clark: The portrait of William Clark was found by Don Shippy of the Mouth of the Platte Chapter Study Group. Don collects Lewis and Clark memorabilia and acquired a May 1, 1919 issue of The Mentor (Vol 7: #6)on E-Bay. The caption under the portrait: "William Clark as a Young Man, from an oil painting in the possession of his great grand-daughter, Miss Eleanor Glasgow Voorhis." The credit line: "By courtesy of Miss Voorhis and The Century Magazine."
Can anyone define alalectic for me? Google has actually failed to answer this. I will deal with the Tennessee news story in a later blog in my series, Aaron Burr, Meriwether Lewis and the Burr-Wilkinson Conspiracy.

New DESC re-enactors DVD is spectacular!
|
The story of the 4 year living history, cross country, re-enactment of the Lewis and Clark Expedition by the Discovery Expedition of St Charles is now available on DVD. Volunteers from all walks of life took part in this extraordinary adventure.
Richard Prestholdt, President of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation devoted 17 months to making this 2 hour DVD, and he did a beautiful job. Bud Clark, the leader of the DESC expedition, and the great-great-great grandson of William Clark did the narration. Bud exemplifies the spirit of his famous ancestor in his straight forward, from the heart, narration. The Booneslick Strings and the songs of the DESC provide the music. The landscape of America provides the visuals.
Expedition of Discovery is available through the Boat House gift shop in St. Charles, MO. It costs $24.95 plus shipping & handing. Call (636) 947-3199. The DESC has a new bookstore at www.lewisandclark.net through which you can place an order. Other store outlets are being sought; wholesale orders are welcome.
Every chapter would enjoy a showing, and might sell the DVD. Two hours is a long time, but it is well worth it. Just plan to take a break at the mid point. You will have a new feeling for the story and the landscape of the trail and the communities of America after viewing this. It is a very special video and should be seen by everyone who loves the Lewis and Clark story.

"Show Me" the statues at Jefferson City
|
"Show me" how to have a good time and call it work, but the Governor of Missouri calls it a "Show-Me Tourism Tour" of the state. (The motto of the state of Missouri is "Show-Me.") Governor Matt Blunt will be touring 12 state parks and historic sites on a 3 day trip around the state in an RV. His tour will end at the dedication of the Lewis and Clark Trailhead Plaza on Wednesday June 4th. The dedication will take place at 5:30 P.M. at Jefferson City near the State Capitol.
Statues seen in Norman, Oklahoma This photo was posted in our forum by Seagoon, who spotted the statues outside the Crucible Foundry, in Norman, Oklahoma but didn't know where they were headed.
Just in off the internet
Betty Kluesner of the Discovery Expedition of St Charles just posted this photo of the statues at Jefferson City. The sculptor is Sabra Tull Meyer. Visit her website to see other examples of her sculpture.
Thanks to William Stine for keeping us posted. We want to know what is going in that Time Capsule at the plaza!

Chouteau County now wants dam built which would flood Lower Portage Route campsite
|
Commissioners of Chouteau County have sent a letter to U. S. Senator Jon Tester, D-MT, asking him to have a feasibility study done on building a new hydroelectric dam 15 miles north of Fort Benton.
The Urquhart family which owns the land where the Lower Portage Route campsite is located, says that the building of a hydro-electric dam on the Missour River near Carter, Montana, 15 miles upstream from Fort Benton, would flood the Lower Portage campsite and put it underwater. The Urquharts also own the land where the proposed coal fired Highwood Generating Station would be located.
Chouteau commissioner Jim O'Hara said, on learning of the Lower Portage Route concern, said "This could be a deal killer right there."
To read more about it, see the May 18th article in the Great Falls Tribune.

In memoriam, Kurt Kestermeier, a gentle giant
|
Kurt Kestermeier attended the St. Charles Lewis and Clark Heritage Days just days before his death on May 24, 2008 at age 53. Kurt is shown here with his good friends Eve Pearlmutter and Joshua Loftis. Kurt used to say he was five foot 22 inches tall (6'10"). Josh is 6'4" and a collateral descendant of expedition member George Shannon. Kurt was an Eagle Scout and received one of its highest honors, the Order of the Arrow. He was active in teaching Native American culture and skills to boy scouts, and was himself an adopted member of the Osage Nation. He will be greatly missed. Kurt was one of the original members of DESC and had many friends. Memorial services will be held at Fort de Chartres Rendezvous, Saturday June 7th at 5 PM; at St Peter's Catholic Church in St Charles on Saturday, June 21st at 10 AM, and then at the Boat House on the Missouri riverfront at 11:30 AM. |
Famous dinosaur Leonardo gets new home
|
The dinosaur Leonardo is the star attraction of the new Great Plains Dinosaur Museum opening down the street from the Phillips County Museum in Malta, Montana on the Hi-Line Highway. Leonardo was only the fourth dinosaur in the world to be found with mummified skin, body tissues and organs. Shown here is a replica of the duck billed dinosaur being moved out of the dinosaur field station. He actually had 77 million year old plant material in his stomach when he was found. Read more about it in an article from the Great Falls Tribune (6/1/08). The real Leonardo is spending a year on display at the Houston Museum of Natural Science in Texas. "Elvis" is in the Phillips County Museum.
BREAKING NEWS: A new dinosaur fossil "Marco" has just been found near the site where Leonardo was found. Great Falls Tribune (6/2/08)

Meriwether Lewis's "missing months"--two new blogs continue the story of 1806-1808
|
Visit my blog to read Parts 2 and 3 of the blog series, The Aaron Burr, Meriwether Lewis and the Burr-Wilkinson Conspiracy Part 3 is at the top of the page, Part 2 is underneath it.
This ongoing series of
blogs deals with the all too brief life of Meriwether Lewis, whom I
believe was assassinated by agents of General James Wilkinson. Lewis
died at age 35 under mysterious circumstances on October 11, 1809 on the Natchez
Trace in Tennessee.
A case for Meriwether Lewis's suicide death usually mentions that he took an unreasonable amount of time to assume his new duties as Governor of Louisiana Territory, thus indicating he was depressed. These two blogs deal with the "missing months" of October, 1806 to March, 1808. In order to understand the post expedition story of Meriwether Lewis's life, it has to be placed in context.
I am preparing to write and publish on the death of Meriwether Lewis, and this is part of my ongoing research.

Spotlight on two other great web sites
|
Lewis and Clark Trail: America's number one website for Lewis and Clark travel is not Lewis and Clark Road Trips, but instead a rival website which has been around for a very long time and keeps on getting better and better. Its address is lewisandclarktrail.com. Diane Norton has been working on it for years. I particularly like her feature on Lewis and Clark art and bronze statues.
Discovering Lewis and Clark: America's number one website for Lewis and Clark information is Joe Mussulman's site, which has been around for an equally long period of time and also keeps on getting better and better. It's address is lewis-clark.org. Joe is a genius, who understood hyper-linked history before any of the rest of us had a clue. He is doing another major upgrade of the site this fall, which will improve the navigation and search functions. The site is packed full of first class information, provided by many experts. Featured this month is "Where Credit is Due: Hunters and Hunting on the Expedition.
