 Greetings ,

Summer Schedules 2011

When July arrives, like so many professions, court reporting slows down noticeably and it is a good time for office staff and our reporters to take a break from the nonstop action that makes up our legal community.

If your law firm has litigation needs over the summer being planned, it may be a good idea to make arrangements a bit further in advance of the "vacation schedule" that so many of us take advantage of during this slower period.

At Flygare & Associates, we can easily handle advance scheduling with our dedicated online scheduling service and our in-house calendaring management software.  All we need from you is a scheduling document and/or deposition notice and we will take it from there.  All jobs are confirmed the prior week before your matter is scheduled to start to ensure that your deposition, hearing, or whatever the assignment is, is professionally managed from beginning to end.

All of us at Flygare & Associates are looking forward to more sunshine and longer days to enjoy our family and friends and we hope the summertime will provide the same to all of you as well.

Best wishes always,

Helping Hands Make a Difference!

Thank you for taking a moment to read our newsletter.  Over the last month or so, those of you receiving our newsletter are aware that we have been soliciting donations to help provide nutritious food and clothing to the less fortunate in our community.

We worked hard to get our donations turned in before the Washington Court Reporters Spring Seminar that took place this last weekend.  We are pleased to announce that we presented over 50 pounds of food products and clothing to the Federal Way Multi Service Center.

Even though the WCRA Spring Seminar is over, Flygare & Associates will continue the donation drive at depositions and hearings along with the main drop location at our office located at 1715 South 324th Place, Suite 250, Federal Way, WA 98003.

Recently, a comment was shared with us that people typically make their donations around the holidays.  However, with the local economy still in the tank, we will continue the donation drive throughout the remainder of the year and so please remember to bring your thoughtful and gracious donations to the depositions our court reporters attend and they will bring those items to our office.

Thanks again and all of us at

Flygare & Associates appreciate

your continued support.

~Chris Lewis.

One word that I really dislike having to put into a transcript is the word "Inaudible".  When I have to put the word "Inaudible" into a transcript I feel that I am not giving you my best work product, which giving you the best possible transcript is my No. 1 goal.

There are a few simple tricks to help Flygare & Associates Transcription Department from having to put "Inaudible" in your transcript.

Speak close to or directly into a microphone so that your voice is easily picked up.  Although I realize you are totally engrossed in presenting your case, try and be mindful of dropping books/writing pads on the tables - the microphones pick those sounds up very easily and drowns out your voice.  Second to that crumbling paper near the microphone is also picked up extremely well and drowns out your voice.

Just being mindful of these simple things can have a dramatic affect on many "Inaudibles" your transcript will have when the final work product is done.  Help us to help you.

This is a very light and refreshing dessert, perfect for picnics and barbecues.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Beef Stroganoff

2 pounds beef tenderloin

¼ c. butter or margarine

1 can (6 oz.) sliced mushrooms, drained

2 cans (10.5 oz.) condensed beef broth (bouillon)

1/3 c. instant minced onion

¼ c. catsup

1 ½ tsp. Garlic salt

1/3 cup all-purpose flour

8 to 10 ounces uncooked medium noodles

2 c. sour cream

3 tbsp. Butter or margarine

Cut meat across the grain into ¾ inch slices, then into strips 3 x ¼ inch.  Melt ¼ cup butter in large skillet, add mushrooms and cook and stir about 5 minutes.  Remove mushrooms.

In same skillet, cook meat until light brown.  Reserving 2/4 cup of the broth, stir in remaining broth, the onion, catsup and garlic salt.  Cover and simmer 15 minutes.  Blend reserved broth and the flour; stir into meat.  Add mushrooms; heat to boiling, stirring constantly.  Boil and stir 1 minute.  Cool; cover and refrigerate.

Cook noodles as directed on package.  Heat stroganoff over low heat.  Stir in sour cream; heat through.  Drain noodles; toss with 3 tablespoons butter.  Serve with stroganoff.

NOTES:

I always skip the part about covering and refrigerating the stroganoff, I just take it from the stove to the table.

This is a wonderful easy dish for having family and friends over for dinner.  This is one of my favorites to serve and I always get rave reviews.

Serve with a loaf of crusty bread and salad and you're set.  Bon appetit.

My Adventure in Online Education
By Colleen Donovan
Transcriptionist  and Court Reporter-in-training

 Online education

At times online schooling, or schooling of any kind when I'm 60 years old, highlights differences in age, maturity, hormones, needs for acceptance by others (or lack thereof), and many other characteristics.

I took a course in modern history, which was basically current events.  Our text was a weekly magazine called "The Week," which discussed events happening around the world.   We gave presentations in our weekly online class, explaining an event we got from the magazine.

One night, a girl gave her presentation explaining an article talking about baby boomers coming of the age to collect social security.  She began, "There was this generation called 'baby boomers', also known as 'flower children', and in this generation the people feel a sense of entitlement and are a drain on society."  She carried on for five minutes and talked as if we are dinosaurs and as if she had heard a story about these heathen people but didn't know if they really existed.

When it came time for the other students to give their opinions about her presentation, I could not remain silent.  I said, "In any generation you will find isolated examples of deviation from norms, but if you were going to generalize about my generation, you just did it entirely wrong."  I proceeded to tell her about what I and my siblings have accomplished, and told her about my friends from high school and college -- I still keep in touch with them through Facebook -- and all that they've accomplished.  I told her it was my peer group that were the educators of her peer group.

During that exchange I felt completely out of place among these youngsters, but a confidence is developed through experience, and I told her what I thought of her opinion of my generation.  When I was through, the others spoke up and agreed with me that we baby boomers are deserving of respect and appreciation for what we have given, and continue to give, to the world and to that girl.
