Greetings ,
House Bill 1205
I am pleased to let our readers know that HB 1205 was voted unanimously out of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Although, the measure has been amended to reflect the fiscal considerations that face the Washington Legislature, I am sure that the educational interaction that took place in bringing the concerns regarding court reporting firms and some of the more unique business practices forward was quite beneficial. Ultimately, the legislators we spoke to now better understand the complex problems that exist in our industry. Many asked that this issue be brought up again when the state budget and the economy are in better shape.
There are a number of issues that should be of concern to the legal community at large. Foremost is the "Compromise and Release" workers compensation legislation. If you are not aware of this legislation, please take the time to find the measure online and become more informed.
There is a corporate income tax being discussed as well. Personally, this was new to me as of today and I will be researching the ramifications both pro and con with this proposal. I would ask that all of our readers do the same.
As important issues arise that I feel our readership may be interested in knowing about, I will endeavor to provide a brief snapshot for you.
Best wishes always,
Roger G. Flygare, CEO and President Roger G. Flygare & Associates, Inc.

The Video Vault
By Chris Lewis, FLVS
Legal Video Specialist
Food Drive UPDATE
Welcome to this edition of The Video Vault, April 2011
The Flygare & Associates food drive is off and running. We have made our first delivery of 29 pounds of food and clothes to the food and clothing bank at the Federal Way Multi Service Center.
We have committed our office staff, court reporters and the local neighborhood to collecting as much nonperishable food and clothing in the next few months as possible, but we cannot do this alone. We need your support!
Please help those in need by bringing any nonperishable food item to your deposition and give it to one of our court reporters or stop by our office to say hello and drop it off anytime. Every little bit helps.
Your small donation can make a big difference in the life of someone in need; don't think one person can't make a difference. Thank you in advance for being one of those who make a difference.
~Chris Lewis.

Transcription Corner By Anna Hirsch
Senior Transcriptionist
RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Aunt Edith's Mystery Cake
This is a very light and refreshing dessert, perfect for picnics and barbecues.
Cake
1 egg, beaten
2 cups fruit cocktail with juice
1 tsp. Vanilla
1 cup flour
1 cup sugar
 tsp. Salt
1 tsp. Soda
Topping
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup brown sugar
Sift together the flour, sugar, salt and soda. Mix together the beaten egg, fruit cocktail and vanilla. Fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients then pour into greased dish. Cover with the topping mixture. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Serve with whipped cream.
If you want to make this with less sugar, I use fruit cocktail with "no added sugar" and I substitute Splenda for the sugar in the cake batter and the Splenda Brown Sugar blend for the topping.

My Adventure in Online Education By Colleen Donovan
Transcriptionist and Court Reporter-in-training
New in my online court reporting education program, but having been around the block many times, one would think after all these years I'd have learned that I'd be sorry if I didn't back up my files. I just never learned the easiest way to do that. Being 60 years old is my excuse, but backing up files is one new trick that this old dog learned very well.
My hard drive fried one day and I lost every document I had for my year's worth of schooling. My court reporting machine, my CaseCatalyst software, my headset, my printer, and my security device were now plugged into a dead duck. I should be the poster child for the flash drive with the caption, "Don't be like that girl."
That was a perfect opportunity for me to practice my life's lesson in bucking up; I became strangely calm. My significant other went out and bought a new laptop. I called the school immediately and reported my predicament. I used my headset on another computer to attend classes. My instructors for this semester emailed me my previously graded assignments. The other students in my classes were very sympathetic and supportive. Not one person other than myself called me "stupid." I would say that I am fortunate in my surroundings. To get the bugs worked out of the new computer and programs and to be completely functional once again took a week. Back on the saddle and enjoying this online school experience, so far I would recommend online education to anyone. But back up your files.
