Greetings ,
IT'S SNOWING OUT, I HAVE A DEPOSITION SCHEDULED!
"It's 7:00 a.m. and it's snowing outside and I've got a 9:00 a.m. deposition today and two tomorrow. I can't get to any of them now but I also need to get these depositions completed without canceling them and paying those huge late cancellation charges. What can I do? What are my options? Who should I call?"
This is a dilemma that Flygare & Associates has dealt with so many times over the years and we have a quick easy solution for you. We utilize bridge communication technology for multiple party conference calls when weather or whatever is going to compromise the completion of a deposition or hearing that needs to be completed by an important cutoff date. It doesn't matter if you're stuck in a bus terminal, an airport, a train station; you just need to be able to have access to a clear connection using a landline, your mobile phone, even Skype.
If you can connect with our office, we will take it from there. We will make the arrangements in minutes and have your important meeting scheduled and ready to go before you can knock the snow off your boots and find a warm place to complete your deposition.
And, of course, this solution works for many, many situations outside of simply bad weather. Our office is also equipped with a PolyCom Videostation as well if you would find the need to see your witnesses and commuting to the facility sites is out of the question.
Flygare & Associates is a full service court reporting company. Try us, I am sure you will be pleased with the results and friendly cooperative spirit of our office team.
Have a great holiday season ~

What's New
Flygare News
Flygare & Associates would like to welcome Colleen to their office family. Colleen was asked to introduce herself to you, our extended family, and here's what she had to say."Greetings to all! I am Colleen Donovan, newest employee at Flygare & Associates. I moved to Washington from Arizona ten years ago, having accepted a transfer by Fidelity National Title to manage a local escrow branch and be an assistant vice president. I was raised in the suburbs of Chicago, attended Northern Arizona University and raised my son in Sedona, Arizona. After 35 years in the escrow field, I am changing fields -- an exciting change! I am going to school for court reporting at the College of Court Reporting, an online program certified by the National Court Reporters Association. I met Roger Flygare and took immediate note of his dedication to excellence and depth of knowledge in the field. If I can glean even a miniscule amount of that information, I will have a great start in any number of related fields. I'm in the office with my training wheels on, and hopefully I have gathered skills over my long career life that will be an asset to Flygare & Associates. I was commended as among the top revenue producers at Fidelity for half of the years I was there, and I'm hoping I can be of service to Roger, Chris, Anna, Jona, all of the Flygare court reporters and all of the current and future clients. I have found all of the employees here to be hard-working professionals who consider themselves partners in the success of their clients and their community, and it is a pleasure to be in such company."

Tech Talk By Jona Christoe
Marketing and Technology
Whether you are on vacation
or stuck in the snow
(or both)
a virtual office can come in very handy from time to time.
With all the technological advances available to todays office staff, there is no reason to be "stuck" without the information and tools to get just about any job done, no matter where you are or what time or day as long as you can access the Internet. A virtual office can be as basic or advanced as you would like and can range in price to set up and maintain from free to hundreds of thousands of dollars. To set up a basic virtual office all you need is to create Google accounts for the people in your office. Google offers a variety of free services such as email, contact storage, calendar and even document creation, editing and storage. Contacts, calendars and documents can be shared between as many people as you like. Google is easy to set up and even easier to use. Go to Http://www.google.com/accounts to get the ball rolling. Google is not the only free choice. You can search for and find free applications for just about anything on the Internet. I like Google because it ties a lot of services and applications together, is easy to use, and almost everything it offers is free. If you would like to get a bit more advanced and want access to your actual office computer from any Internet connected computer give GoToMyPC a try. Http://www.gotomypc.com . There is a charge for this service but you can try it for 30 days and see if this choice is right for you. If you really want to rock the virtual office thing and plan to run the whole company from remote locations with several users/workers it may be a good idea to hire a professional IT/networking/virtual office specialist to help you set up your virtual office to be exactly what you need. I know that my virtual office has come in handy on several occasions when for whatever reason (snow) I couldn't make it into my physical office. If you would like to brainstorm ideas for virtual office and technology solutions send me an email at jona@flygare.com . Have a great December, happy holidays and I'll talk with you again in next year,
~Jona

Transcription Corner

 The "Nyms"
We use them all the time in our daily conversations and in our everyday work but what are Acronyms, Antonyms, Synonyms and Homonyms?
Antonym: the word antonym comes from the Greek words anti (meaning opposite) and onoma (meaning name). Antonyms are what have been referred to as gradable opposites, hot and cold, fast and slow, short and tall.
Synonyms: the word synonym comes from the Greek words syn (meaning with) and onoma (meaning name). Simply synonyms are different words that have the same meaning, bread, dough, cash and funds all refer to money.
Homonyms: the word "homonym" comes from the Greek word homonumos (meaning having the same name), homos (meaning one and the same) and onoma (meaning name). These words are spelled and pronounced the same but have different meanings, the stalk of a plant and to stalk someone as in to follow or harass that person.
Acronyms: we all know, they are abbreviations which are formed by using the first letter of each word in a series of words. These words can be anything such as FAQ - frequently asked questions, DNA - deoxyribonucleic acid.
All of the "nyms" play a part in the written record. They can help explain or describe an item, a person or a situation. When transcribing hearings or proceedings it is fairly easy from a Transcriptionist standpoint to know by the context of what is being said which version of their, there or they're is to be typed into the transcript.
Acronyms are a much harder entity for us to transcribe. Many acronyms used out there we are not familiar with and unless the acronym is spelled out we may end up spelling it like it sounds and putting (phonetic) behind the acronym. Recently I typed a hearing where the term SEPA was used. While listening to the hearing, half the time it sounded liked they were saying SEPA and sometimes it sounded like they were saying SETA. Without someone spelling out the acronym so I could ensure the proper spelling I had no way of knowing which way was the proper spelling. I ended up calling the judge to find out that term plus a few other terms as well. To ensure proper that the written word is as accurate as possible, spelling acronyms out, at least the first time it is used, would be a great help to the Transcriptionist doing the job.

Free Lunch
A little extra something for nothing.
One of the few good things about this difficult economy is that it seems to help us to focus on the really important things. A handmade gift this holiday season can tell those important people in your life that they are worth something more than money, they are worth TIME. Here are a couple of ideas for some simple to make gifts that are inexpensive to put together and are both elegant and delicious.
I hope your holiday is filled with handmade gifts.
Rainbow Bean Soup Mix in a Quart Jar
Ingredients For Jar:
Generous ¾ cup each of the following beans:
Dried Red Beans
Dried Great Northern Beans
Dried Split Peas
Dried Lentils
Dried Black Beans
Seasonings: (Mix and place in a thin zipper sandwich bag)
2 Tbsp. Minced Onion
2 Tbsp. Beef Bouillon Granules
2 Tbsp. Dried Parsley Flakes
2 Tsp. Dried Basil
2 Tsp. Powered Lemonade Mix with Sugar
1 ½ Tsp. Chili Powder
1 Tsp. Garlic Powder
1 Tsp. Pepper
1 Tsp. Dried Oregano
NOTES: A wide mouth quart jar works best because you can get your fingers into it easier but a regular quart jar works well too. For a real rainbow of colors look in your bulk food section for red lentils or yellow split peas. If you can't find any use brown lentils or pick a colorful dry bean of your choice for this layer.
Directions:
Place each type of beans in jar in the order listed above. Top with seasoning bag. Gently flatten bag so it can be seen from all sides of the jar. Put lid on jar. You can decorate jar with a piece of fabric over the top and then put the screw on ring over the fabric to hold it in place.
Attach the following recipe on a card to the jar.
Rainbow Bean Soup
Remove seasoning packet. Set aside. Rinse beans. Place beans in a large microwave safe dish. Cover with water 1" to 2" over top of beans. Cover dish loosely with plastic wrap. Microwave on high 15 minutes rotating after 7 minutes. Drain and rinse beans very well. Place beans in a large pan/pot. Add 8 cups water and 1 (28 oz.) can crushed tomatoes and seasoning packet. Cover and bring to a boil. Lower heat, cover pan and simmer 1 ½ hours or until beans are tender. Stir occasionally. Makes 12 cups of soup.
Option: Top the jar with a 5 oz. can of ham. Then change the recipe directions to add water, tomatoes, ham, etc.
Creamy Cheese Soup in a Pint Jar
1 (1.5 oz.) Packet Knorr Four Cheese Sauce Mix
1 ½ Tsp. Chicken Bouillon granules
¼ Tsp. Pepper
1 (1.4 oz.) Packet Knorr Vegetable Soup Mix
2 Tbsp. Dried Parsley Flakes
1 ½ Cups Powdered Coffee Creamer
2 Tbsp. Corn Starch
Mix ½ packet cheese sauce mix, 1 ½ tsp. Chicken bouillon granules and pepper together.
Mix ½ pack of vegetable soup mix and parsley together.
Mix powdered coffee creamer and cornstarch together.
Place cheese mixture in jar first. Press down firmly.
Place vegetable mixture in jar next. Press down firmly.
Place coffee creamer mixture into jar next. Add a little more creamer if necessary to fill jar.
Put lid on jar.
Decorate jar with a piece of cloth before putting ring on jar. Or attach ribbons and/or bows onto jar after putting ring on jar.
Attach the following recipe written on a recipe card to the jar.
Creamy Cheese Soup
Empty jar of soup mix into a medium pan. Mix dry ingredients well with a whisk. Add 2 ½ cups boiling water. Mix well with whisk. Bring to a boil. Boil 3 to 5 minutes, stirring often, scraping bottom of pan often. Makes 3 cups soup.
NOTE: You can always double the recipe and place in a quart jar instead of a pint jar. Wide mouth jars work best. |
