Greetings ,

Welcome to our second newsletter.

Court reporting has been a wonderful profession for me over the years.   It is one that never ceases to provide me glimpses into the legal world that most "civilians" cannot understand or appreciate the various nuances involved in working lawsuits and complaints through the legal justice system.  From ships stranded on reefs to low back injuries from on-the-job injuries, they are all important to those involved and it is really amazing to see the dedicated hard work that lawyers and their various staffs put into the work on behalf of their clients.  I am much honored to be part of the American justice system and be able to work within the legal community of Washington.

Currently, as part of my duties associated with the Washington Court Reporters Association, I am asking the 2010 Legislature to pass bills that would enact continuing education for our profession.  This will help all working professionals stay current with state laws and the ever improving technologies that make our work easier to not only share with lawyers but improve our efficiency at the same time.

Hopefully, also in the 2010 legislative session, licensed Washington court reporters will be included the in the RCW that governs persons authorized to administer an oath for testimony purposes which will remove the necessity of Washington court reporters from maintaining a Notary Public license for the simply judicial function that is performed outside of courthouses thousands of times daily across our state.

Our staff at Flygare & Associates is always working to stay better informed and educated to bring you and your office the best possible court reporter services, video productions, transcriptions services from courthouse recordings, and the myriad of other services that we provide.

Be sure to visit our web site at http://www.flygare.com to see the full list of services and complementary help that Flygare & Associates can provide you.  If you have an event you need scheduled that's fast approaching, that can also be done on our web site.

Best wishes to you all in 2010,

How important is it for the videographer to state the time of day when going on and off the record?  Let me tell you a story...

One late night a few years ago, we were shooting a video deposition downtown Seattle at a well-established law firm. The deposition had gone on all day and now into the evening.  We had been on and off the record so many times I was having to use a third sheet of paper to mark the objections, exhibits and other note worthy items.  One of which is the time of day we are on and off the record.

With that in mind, it got to be about 7:30 PM and the lawyers and the witness were almost at wits end.  We were rolling along and had just gone back on the record and one of the attorneys bypassed the court reporter and asked me if I could replay the video before the last break.  The entire room turned their focus on me and the lead attorney said, "Can you pull those questions up from the last session?"

Now, I had been recording video proceedings for about seven years at that time and have never been asked to search or back up the recording to hear what was said.

With all eyes on me and the reporter not saying anything about her back up tape, I checked my log and noted the times of us being on and off the record, searched my video and played back the last session for all in the room to listen to.

I was happy to be able to assist the lawyers with their request, so I will pass along to all who read this, please allow the videographer the opportunity to note and state the time of day when going on and off the record, as it may become very important.

Social Networking for Business

Social Networking is THE buzzword for 2010, but what is it and why should I "waste" my time and energy?

Whether you are getting your hair cut, car fixed, house painted, finding a court reporter, or hiring a new staff member... would you rather let your fingers do the walking or ask a friend?
I know I would much rather call someone who is either recommended or an expert in his or her field.   Social Networking can help on both fronts.

I have found that, by far, the best social networking site for business is Linkedin.  Linkedin is not industry specific so it crosses many demographics and links you to others in your field, service providers, professional opportunities, as well as CUSTOMERS and CLIENTS.

On Linkedin, you can establish yourself as an expert by making public your education, experience, and qualifications.  But the best part of Linkedin, in my opinion, is the ability to give and receive recommendations.

When I am looking for a service provider, the first thing I do is check Linkedin for firms that have good recommendations from people I know.  Then I look for recommendations from people that my friends know, and so on.

So I strongly suggest that you join Linkedin, fill out your profile as completely as possible, and take the time and effort to write recommendations for those businesses that have done a good job and ask those that you serve to do the same for you; because, people are looking and with this tool it will help them to find you.
