Take the Woodward Automotive Heritage Audio Tour and discover the rich history of metro Detroit and how we put the world on wheels! Below are a just a few of the fun facts you'll discover on the tour.
 
1) Detroit-Windsor Vehicular Tunnel opened to the public in 1930. Until recently it was the world's only underwater, transnational vehicular tunnel. An average of 24,000 vehicles pass through the tunnel daily.
 
2) The 1904 Ford Piquette Avenue Plant is the "birthplace of the Model T,"  the most significant car of the twentieth century that "put the world on wheels."

  
3)
Woodward Avenue the only street where automobile engineers "street tested" new models adding unique significance to "Cruising Woodward" in the 1950's - late 1960's.
 
4) Davison Limited Expressway built in 1941, the first urban highway in the United States intersects Woodward Avenue in Highland Park.
 
5) The world's first electric traffic light was installed at Woodward and Michigan Avenues in 1920.
 
6) Section 10 of the Woodlawn Cemetery includes the final resting places of several notable figures including Joseph Hudson, Roy Chapin, C.J Whitney, Clayton Grinnell.

Get Your Museum Adventure Pass & Discover the World

Discover a world of art and culture that inspires creativity, learning and more with the Cultural Alliance of Southeastern Michigan's program, Museum Adventure Pass.  The program in its third year brings together more than 20 cultural institutions to bring their work to new audiences with this promotion.
 
So how does it work?
By  visiting your local public library and showing your library  card, you can receive a pass.  The Museum Adventure Pass provides various discounts for admission to the participating institutions. Some participants include Birmingham Historical Museum & Park, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Cranbrook Institute of Science and more. For more information please visit www.detroitadventurepass.org.

Find Art on Woodward

spirit of detroitDiscover the great public art of Woodward with the Woodward Avenue Action Association's Public Art Audio Tour. The free tour takes visitors on a journey from the heart of downtown Detroit to historic downtown Pontiac highlighting the works of Marshall Fredericks, Carl Milles, Bertel Thorwaldsen and Michael Hall to name a few.The WA3 Public Art tour can be accessed at www.woodwardavenue.org. It can be downloaded to your cell phone, Mp3/IPod device or burned to a cd for your convenience. The tour takes two days to complete in its entirety. 

 

Catch the WAVE

Know before you go with the recently launched Woodward Avenue Virtual Experience (WAVE). This new on-line Google based mapping tool is housed on the Woodward Avenue Action Association's website. The WAVE will provide visitors with a one stop shop for information on historic attractions, cultural gems and the business and service providers along Woodward Avenue. Cruise into the Future with the Detroit Science Center 

future cruise logoAugust 19 - August 22, Midtown Detroit will come alive with the sounds and sights of auto mania with  "Future Cruisin 2010". The Detroit Science Center hosts this unique event showcasing the connection between math, science and design. Dubbed "Future Cruisin", the event will celebrate the history of the auto while celebrating future innovation. Partnering with the DSC is the Detroit Historical Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts, Piquette Avenue Plant Museum,  Motor Sports Hall of Fame, Scarab Club, Wayne State University and the Woodward Avenue Action Association.

 

Activities featured throughout the weekend include the Pinewood Derby, where kids and adults can build their own derby cars to race! Dream about being Dale Earnhardt Jr's Pit Crew Chief? Then sign up to compete in the Pit Crew Challenge. Be sure to enter your classic car in the Future Cruisin' Car Competition. There are 10 categories including Historical, Green-Vehicle, Powertrain, Body & Paint, Mural, Interior, Audio and more. 

 

The WA3 will be offering free copies of  Automotive Heritage Audio Tour along with other giveaways and more alongside Preservation Wayne and  MotorCities National Heritage Area. Other fun activities provided by Lawrence Technological University and Center for Creative Studies. Every third weekend in August, Woodward Avenue is taken over by close to 1 million car enthusiasts, gathered to pay homage to the "Cruisin Culture" birthed along this All-American Road. Produced by Woodward Dream Cruise Inc, the "Woodward Dream Cruise" celebrates its 16th year as the premier event for cruisers from around the world. Ranging from classics to hot rod cars attendees will treated to a feast of all things automotive Saturday, August 21.

 

While the main event is the parade of cars which starts the Saturday before, there will be a number of family friendly activities taking place throughout the week.

 

Berkley -
