Roseland
Cemetery Celebrates 100 Years

roseland cemetery enterance

As Roseland Cemetery celebrates 100 years this month its history stretches far beyond being the final resting place for everyone from soldiers who fought in the Spanish American War to famous Michiganders such as Ira Leonard Grinnell, Dr. Charles F Kuhn and Ora J. Mulford.

Before the arrival of settlers in 1820, Ottawa Indians farmed the Berkley site. In the mid 1800's John Benjamin and his son John Jr. built Benjamin Muley Grain Cradle, an innovation key in enabling farmers to quadruple their productivity. In 1906 Roseland Park was established and was designated a National Wildlife Sanctuary by the Department of Natural Resources. The park established by a group of local businessmen including Clarence C. Burton, Samuel D. Holcomb, Chas Endicott and more was dedicated in 1910.  In 1914 the cemetery dedicated the Rose Chapel Mausoleum, at the time the largest public structure of its kinds in the county.

SMART Transit Programs Provide Cost Savings to Businesses and Employees

ncaa basketball

As the only regional transit system for southeast Michigan, SMART offers convenient, reliable and safe transportation for Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties. There are approximately 2.5 million people living within a ¼ mile radius of a SMART bus route. Serving an average of 13 million riders annually, SMART's fixed route, connector and community transit services connect people to employment and medical and educational institutions throughout the region. A vital service to the community, 70 percent of riders utilize SMART to reach places of employment and 20 percent ride SMART to reach educational institutions.

To address the needs of local transit, in 1995 SMART created the Community Partnership Program (CPP).  An award winning program, the CPP provides communities access to funding and SMART resources to operate local community transit programs.  In addition, SMART Connector provides curb-to-curb transportation for seniors and people with disabilities.  Almost 60 percent of SMART Connector riders are visiting medical facilities or going to work. Through these two programs alone, SMART provides more than 1 million rides annually to medical facilities, work, school and retail establishments for people with disabilities and seniors. To get more information on Get A Job, Get A Ride and TransitChek programs, please visit www.smartbus,org, or call 1-866-962-5515 and press (3) for employee programs.

On August 3, 2010 residents in the SMART service area will have the opportunity to vote on the public transportation proposal to renew SMART's tax millage at .59 mil per household which is approximately $59 for a home with a state equalized value of $100,000.

Entrepreneurial Spotlight: Tim Ross, President, Ross Mortgage

tim ross 1While other mortgage companies have come and gone in an era of non-traditional loans, a housing boom gone bust Ross Mortgage has managed to stay above the fray and continue to grow.  A family company, Chairman Hugh Ross founded in 1983 it has deep Michigan roots starting off with one location in Berkley. In 1986 Hugh and son Tim purchased Michigan Mortgage Corporation changing the name to Ross Mortgage.  Celebrating over 50 years of service to families the company now has 18 locations throughout Michigan, Florida and Ohio.

Ross Mortgage is the largest independently owned mortgage banking company in the state providing loans to Michigan home buyers. Currently the Corp Magazine Michigan Bright Spot Award winning company has 160 employees with about 130 based here in Michigan.

Along with a decision to stay in Michigan is the Ross family's choice to locate their headquarters along Woodward Avenue. "Woodward is a street that everyone in the region knows. It's a central location so that it's easy to reach for our clients. We are reachable outside of rush hour times in 25 minutes from any location.  For us that accessibility is critical in working with our clients". said Ross.

Recognizing the importance of Woodward, Ross also supports the role of the WA3 through his membership and enthusiasm for what the organization does. "The WA3 ties together businesses, residents and government for the complete care of the road. It makes sure that you and your business are represented as well as acts as an incredible resource for your businesses needs" said Ross. For more information on Ross Mortgage please visit www.rossmortgage.com or call 248-547-4700.
