Byway Feature - Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit
In the middle of one of the most controversial times in Detroit's recent history this unique art institution was marked by a neon art installation project on its exterior stating "Everything's Going to Be Alright". An introduction of sorts to one of the newer additions to the artistic community that is Midtown, the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. As the only contemporary museum in the city it brings a breath of fresh air to the arts landscape in metropolitan Detroit.
Opened in 2006, the museum was the vision of it's founding board led by Marsha Miro, Mitch Cope, Lynn Crawford, Burt Aaron, Cate Strumbosm, Julie Taubman and Danielle Karmanos. Located at 4454 Woodward in Detroit across from the historic Whitney restaurant, the building was originally purchased by the Manoogian Foundation for use by the Detroit Institute of Arts for use as a contemporary art space. As those plans never materialized the building was then rented out to MOCAD. Since its opening four years ago, the museum has featured such exhibits as "Meditations in a Emergency" (2006), "Introspection on War" (2007), "Shrinking Cities" (2007), "Holy Hip-Hop" (2008) and its current exhibit, "For the Blind Man in the Dark Room Looking for the Black Cat that isn't there" running until April 4.
