Getting Your Community's Fair Share from
Washington
Are you in the know about current legislation in Congress that could affect funding for your community? According to lawyer and lobbyist, Daniel Cherrin of North Coast Strategies these are three bills to keep your eyes on.
Jobs Bill (Jobs for Main Street Act of 2010, H. R. 2454) The House passed a jobs bill in December of 2009 that would make funding available for additional police and fire , small business support, job training, clean water, transit, energy innovation loans and more.
Surface Transportation Authorization (S. 1489/H.R TBD) This would provide a 5 year authorization to fund transportation and infrastructure projects including transit, transit oriented development & rail. The current legislation also will create a national infrastructure bank, create new programs to relieve congestion and help local governments focus more on regional transportation and planning.
Liveable Communities Act (Dodd) This act aims to help communities plan for and create better and more affordable places to live in part by promoting new transportation policies, i.e access to use of sidewalks, bike paths and public transit.

Entrepreneurial Spotlight: Dr. Steven Shanbom, Shanbom Eye Specialist
"I'm committed to Michigan. I love the area and quite frankly it's one of the greatest places to be right now". Dr. Steven Shanbom's love for Michigan and commitment to medical excellence are just two reasons why he is one of the area's most beloved ophthalmologists specializing in cataracts and refractive surgery.
A Wayne State University medical school grad, Shanbom provides the latest in lasik surgery and more to patients from all over the metro Detroit area at his state of the art facility located in Berkley, MI. This internist turned ophthalmologist, says that the area is poised for continued growth in the medical field, particularly in ophthalmology and geriatrics due to the states aging population. So besides his surgical skills whats made the practice so successful? "Learning how to be a business pro. In med school you learn to hone your craft as a physician but not as a business owner. That's been something that has come with time and on-going education. I've had to learn all about the business of medicine and it's made me all the better for it." said Shanbom.
Even with his own practice and being on staff at St. John's Health System, Detroit Medical Center and Beaumont Hospitals the father and husband still finds time to give back to his community. He is active in several organizations including Jewish Family Services.

WA3 Announces $40,000 Awarded in State Planning Grant Funds |
The WA3 has obtained a $40,000 2010 State Planning Grant to further its non-motorized plan efforts on Woodward. The WA3 continues to coordinate efforts to improve non-motorized planning in south Oakland county with the cities of Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Huntington Woods, Royal Oak, and Birmingham. This fall, Giffels-Webster prepared preliminary working documents by evaluating existing community plans and presenting general conditions and recommendations to the communities in late 2009. MDOT, the Road Commission for Oakland County and SEMCOG also had input into the initial plan document. Discussion on how a coordinated Woodward non-motorized plan should complement and be considered as part of the regional transit plans is currently underway to determine the plan's desired outcomes. A traffic study, road diet and/or access management plan are some of the recommendations currently being considered. |
