Calling All Aspiring Filmakers!
The Ferndale Film Festival is offering local filmakers the chance to showcase your work. Break out your video camera, flip phone, web cam, red cam or even your super 8, any means at your disposal to create a 300 second movie. Films must be shot in formats of black and white, and/or silent or created as an homage to an Academy Award winning film. Submissions must be received and registered by no later than 12 Noon EST on March 7, 2010, the day of the Academy Awards. Films must be submitted on non blu ray DVD. The submission fee of $50 includes two tickets to the exclusive 2010 Academy Awards party on March 7th at Dino's Lounge. The 2010 Academy Awards Party at Dino's Lounge will feature an oscar simulcast, screenings of all Micro Mini entries, awards ceremony, strolling dinner and champagne toast. Detroit Symphony Orchestra Presents Classical Roots
If you love classical music don't miss one of the premier events of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's season; Classical Roots Celebration. Since 1978 the Detroit Symphony Orchestra has celebrated the contributions of African-Americans to classical music with its' annual concert "Classical Roots". Dedicated to preserving the heritage of African-American composers, musicians and educators, the program honors those who have made extraordinary contributions in this field.
This year's event kicks off on Friday, January 29th with the Classical Roots Concert Family & Student Night held at the Max. M. Fisher. Music Center. This year's event will honor the legendary Olly Wilson with performances by Detroit native and world renown violinist, Regina Carter, the DSO and the Brazeal Dennard Chorale performing. The concert will be conducted by Leonard Slatkin. One of the highlights of the concert will be the world premier of "Concerto for Violin" written by Billy Childs for Carter. Tickets for Friday's concert range from $89 to $275 for four and include a meet and greet with Slatkin and Carter.
Saturday, January 30th the black-tie fundraiser will take place. Tickets are $150 and include the cocktail reception, concert and a dessert & dancing afterglow. January 29th -February 6th the streets of Ferndale will come alive with the best in Blues as the 9th annual Ferndale Blues Festival rolls into town. Started in 2001 by community volunteers the festival has developed into a nine day music lovers feast taking over a dozen venues while raising money for local charities. To date the festival has raised close to $20,000 for groups such as Ferndale Youth Assistance. Past acts have included Electric Gypsy, Luther Badman Keith, Whitney Morgan, The Howling Diablo's and many more. Entrepreneurial Spotlight: Paul Chambers, Co-Founder Core 3 Solutions
At 16, Paul Chambers pitched his first investors and with partner Ryan Deyer, cultivated what is now known as Core 3 Solutions. Now celebrating their 12th year in business and five years since they hung their first shingle in Birmingham, the business has exploded.
A complete one stop shop for all of your companies technological needs, what makes Core 3 one of the fastest growing companies in the area is Chambers commitment to customer service. Chambers a 2009 Crain's 40 Under 40 winner says, "We strive to understand all of our clients needs and help them to grow their business. WA3 Announces $10,000 Available for Facade Improvements along 6-8 Mile Business District Corridor
The Woodward Avenue Action Association is still accepting applications for façade improvement funding. The organization has $10,000 available for businesses along the Woodward in the 6-8 Mile Business District. Funding for the physical improvements are made possible by the City of Detroit's Office of Neighborhood Revitalization program ReFresh! program. Recently the WA3 and ONCR awarded the Italian bistro, La Dolce Vita $15,000 for improvement project. Façade design work was done by Steve Flum Inc. for LDV and construction is slated to start this spring.
