Thank You!
The Woodward Avenue Action Association would like to thank each and every one of you for all of your support in what has been an incredible year for our organization.
Together in 2009 we: celebrated the best in design and business along the byway at our Woodward Corridor & Design Awards, helped brides discover bliss in finding all their needs with Weddings on Woodward, gave the corridor a spring cleaning with Clean the D, took steps to make Woodward communities walkable by brining in internationally renown Walkability expert Dan Burden for our Walkability Audit, organized the residents & business owners of the 6-8 mile Woodward area into the 6-8 Mile Business District and was awarded recognition as a ReFresh! District and $45,000 from the City of Detroit, Office of Neighborhood & Revitalization for facade improvements, recognized the 100th anniversary of the first mile of concrete paved highway in the world, met the Community Foundations' Arts & Culture Challenge, was awarded the All-American Road designation and more.
Without your support none of this would have been possible. To find out how you can become more involved in all that the WA3 does or to support us by becoming members please contact our offices at 248-288-2004. May you and your family have a safe and happy holiday season as always celebrating along Woodward.
WA3 Unveils Film Friendly Website Section
Filmmakers can access valuable information on filming in Woodward's 11 communities and two counties in one stop in the new 'Film Friendly Woodward" section of the Woodward Avenue Action Association (WA3) website.
"The WA3 works with a diverse array of communities and businesses along the corridor and can assist filmmakers in finding everything from the perfect location to the best options in craft services and accommodations" Said WA3 Executive Director, Heather Carmona.
The film section includes a comprehensive listing of each community with the following information
· Community Overview
· Each community's film permit process & film office contact information
· Photo gallery
· Listing of local vendors with film experience
· Guide to various state and local government/film office contacts
Some of the films shot in Woodward communities include; Prayers for Bobby, Grand Torino, Whip it, Gifted Hands and more. To date the film industry has generated $40.3 million dollars for local businesses through the purchase of goods and services alone with an additional $25.1 million spent on wages and salary according to the recent Center for Economic Analysis/Michigan State University study regarding the Michigan Motion Picture Production Credit. "As the heart of Southeastern Michigan we want to continue to ensure that some of those funds benefit the communities and businesses along Woodward Avenue." said Carmona.
For more information about filming on historic Woodward Avenue please contact Executive Director, Heather Carmona at 248-288-2004 or admin@woodwardavenue.org.

Entrepreneurial Spotlight: Paying it Forward, Two Business Owners Making a Difference
It's easy to give during the holiday season but some local business owners make it their mission to pay it forward throughout the year. David Wachler & Sons Gary Wachler and C & N Party Rental's Lars Burkeen are shining examples of what it means to be a good neighbor.
Apart of the family business for over 20 years, Gary Wachler knows the jewelry industry inside out, however putting a smile on a future brides face isn't all that Wachler loves to do. Remembering his own childhood night spent in a lonely Children's Hospital ward and how puppets his mother left made the time spent there a little less anxiety filled, Wachler launched Comfort Bears. For a donation of $5 one bear will go to a child at one of the hospital and long term care facilities Comfort Bears have partnered with including fellow WA3 member, William Beaumont Hospital. "Giving back to those in need is a family tradition and this is just my way of continuing it." said Wachler. For more informationon Comfort Bears and Davdi Wachler & Sons Jewelers, click here.
A fixture on the Detroit's events scene, Lars Burkeen is the go to man for all your event design needs. The force behind C & N Party Rentals team of designers has worked on events from platinum weddings to 3,000 people galas. With such wide ranging list of clients, Burkeen is most passionate about the work he is able to do with local charities. A few of the organizations, Burkeen has worked closely with to assist them in their event planning and design needs include, American Cancer Society and AIDS Walk Detroit. According to Burkeen, " There is some name recognition aspects to being "out there " working with all the orgs we do, but the bottom line for me is that by giving back you gain so much. You get to help change the community you live in, save a life or help a child by just donating your time and talent". For more information on C & N Party Rentals click here.
