Santa Monica College Dedicates New Solar System
If you haven't yet heard, Santa Monica moved another step toward its goal of energy independence on October 29, when Santa Monica College celebrated the completion of a $3.6 million solar and energy efficiency project. Chevron Energy Solutions provided the financing for the project, which will pay for itself exclusively by energy savings on utility bills. The 408 watt DC system generates over 50,000 kilowatt hours per month, providing electricity for two garages and a majority of the College's Business Education Building.
Efficiency upgrades included a campus-wide lighting retrofit, variable speed drives, new heating hot water boilers, fire alarm systems and emergency circuit upgrades. Over its lifetime, the upgrades will save over $14 million for the campus, and reduce carbon emissions by more than 1,500 metric tons annually.
Solar Santa Monica is currently working with the College to identify other solar opportunities on the campus.

Town Hall Introduces "New Deals" for Going Solar
At the October 26 Town Hall, a crowd of about 60 people listened and asked questions of a panel of solar marketers addressing ways to get solar "with no money down."
In the marketplace today, "no money down" means via a lease or a Power Purchase Agreement. Both methods of financing are now being offered for residential systems in Santa Monica.

The speakers came from Solar Santa Monica's list of Preferred Contractors. In the picture above, from left, they were Scott Gordon (SunRun), Jesse Raynes (SolarCity), and James Brennen (OpenNeighborhoods/ Martifer).
Naturally, every "deal" is different, but the basics to understand are these:
· With a lease, you pay a fixed monthly "rent" for panels on your roof. The leasing company takes care of maintenance; you get the power. To be eligible, you must have a good credit rating.
· In a PPA, you pay directly for the power your system provides, but at a price that is less than you would pay for power from the utility. Again, you must qualify, and again you are freed from system maintenance.
· In some cases, you can "pre-pay" - that is, put down an amount at the beginning of the deal - and thus buy down your monthly payment. (It's like buying power for the next 10 years at today's prices.)
· At the end of the lease or PPA period, typically 20 years, you will have to decide what to do: extend the arrangement, buy the system from the company, or ask that it be removed. (Not a lot of detail on this, since no leases have yet come to an end.)
Many questions were raised: What happens if the property is sold mid-contract? How is the system sized? What if the company goes out of business? Each contractor had slightly different answers, so be sure to compare carefully before you make a decision between a lease or a PPA. And don't overlook that old standby, direct ownership, if you have the money to invest and want the very best return. |

Southern California Edison (SCE) is now offering a 0% interest loan for certain non-residential efficiency projects. The loan is paid off via your monthly SCE bill. Taking advantage of OBF can set you on the path to years of lower monthly electricity costs. In order to take advantage of this offer you must: - Have been an active SCE customer for at least the last two years
- Be in good credit standing with SCE (i.e. not having a disconnection notice, 48 hour shutoff, or returned check in the last 12 months)
- Be considering an upgrade that carries an SCE rebate or other incentive. If requisites are met then you can apply online for an Express Solutions (for projects not installed) or file a Customized Solutions Efficiency (for current projects) Incentive. Businesses may obtain from $5,000 up to $100,000, to be paid off over 5 years. Institutions and non-profits can apply for up to $250,000 over a 10-year term.
For more information and how to apply, refer to the official SCE website at http://www.sce.com/business/onbill/. |
News From Solar Santa Monica

· Prices for Solar.
Lower prices for panels, and increased competition, have brought the cost of solar to its lowest level since our program began. A project that was too expensive a few years ago may work now! · Municipal Solar Project. SSM has begun a detailed study to identify the potential for solar on all municipal buildings and properties. The study includes an analysis of each site and its current energy usage profile. For the City to meet its goal of carbon neutrality, more City buildings will have to participate in generating clean energy.
· Preferred Contractors. New contractors have been added to our "Preferred Contractor" list. To be listed, contractors must meet City requirements for licenses and insurance. The list of contractors also includes a brief statement as to their services, the number of installs done in Santa Monica, and any special offers for SSM Program participants. Of course, there is also a link to the contractor's website. As always, we recommend that you get more than one bid before making a final decision on a solar or efficiency contractor - and we will be happy to help you compare bids.
· Solar Corridor. SSM continues to work closely with businesses along Olympic Blvd. to develop a "solar corridor." If your business is along or near Olympic, give us a call for a free solar potential evaluation. |
