Installations in the Pipeline
Pally-Korb
This great Santa Monica house is next on the list for "solarizing." The Pally/Korb residence will soon be sporting a 3.9 kW system to be installed by Solar Santa Monica Preferred Partner Advanced Solar Electric.

TAX CREDIT RUNNING OUT

Not a lot of attention has been paid to it, but savvy homeowners are aware that certain home improvements made between January 1, 2006 through December 31, 2007 are eligible for a tax credit. [Tax credits for solar systems were extended through 2008.]

The list of eligible improvements includes adding insulation and replacing windows and roofs. The maximum amount of credit is $500. For details, check the Energy Star website. www.energystar.gov

For more about Energy Star, attend a live discussion on November 14 in Culver City, sponsored by the Sierra Club, that will focus on how Energy Star works and is saving citizens money. For more info, contact Catherine Vargas.

  • Solar Capacity

Chart: Cumulative Installed Solar Capacity (kW) in Santa Monica, 2007 at far right in red.

Next Thursday the City of Santa Monica will recognize 2007 Solar Champions. These are the people who have put their money where their mouth is, investing in solar for their homes and/or businesses over the past 10 months -- and, as the chart shows, doubling Santa Monica's installed solar capacity.

Interest was great in January when we kicked-off the program, and given the past year's activity, we expect a terrific celebration.

Come that night, and you'll join with Mayor Bloom and other City dignitaries to celebrate our newest Solar Champions. You'll also hear from our keynote speaker, Terry Tamminen. Tamminen is Governor Schwarzenegger's Chief Environmental Policy Advisor and he'll be putting efforts like Solar Santa Monica into a local and regional perspective.

Also planned - a chance for informal conversation over refreshments, starting at 6:30 p.m. in the courtyard, plus facilitated community discussion at the end of the program.

RSVP now to Althea Osmond via email, or call her at 310 458-4992.

(The Town Hall will be held at the Martin Luther King Auditorium, Main Library, 601 Santa Monica Boulevard.)

    _____________________________

Do you know a Solar Champion? One of the main items on the November 1 agenda is to recognize all Santa Monicans who have installed solar on their home or business in 2007.

We'd feel awful if we missed someone! If you know a Solar Champion - a family member, a neighbor, a colleague -- please send us a name and contact info and we'll send them a personal invitation. Thanks for helping acknowledge these great residents of our city. Please contact Virginia Nicols with Solar Champion names: (949) 450- 7153.

  • Susan and Gino

Susan Munves, Administrator of the Energy and Green Building Programs Office in Santa Monica, recently participated in EcoMotion's 2007 Germany Solar Research Tour.

One of the tour visits was a briefing at the Freiburg im Breisgau office of the European Secretariat of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI). Santa Monica was one of the first U.S. ICLEI members.

There, Director Gino Van Begin (above right, with Munves) welcomed the group, explaining ICLEI's growing stature given aggressive European Union goals for climate protection. He then brought in his staff to hear a presentation about Solar Santa Monica's unique community-based program.

  • tankless water heater

After considerable research, Southern California Gas has begun a pilot rebate program to support tankless water heater installations. To be eligible, you must:

Buy a new tankless water heater -- that will replace a conventional tank-type water heater -- from a "participating manufacturer." (This list includes Rinnai, Takagi and Noritz, companies SSM has worked with.) Your certified installer will take care of the paperwork to get you a $200 rebate from the Gas Company.
Buy the right tankless water heater - that is, one that meets Federal Efficiency Standards, with an Energy Factor (EF) of .80 or greater -- and you may also be eligible for a $300 federal tax credit.

The Solar Santa Monica office has a demonstration model of an eligible tankless water heater, with all specifications and rebate coupons. If you've been considering tankless, now may be the time to look more closely.

Any questions, comments, or concerns about tankless or other water heaters? Call Solar Santa Monica's chief residential home Assessor Russ Flanigan at (949) 450-7154 or reach him via email.
