Financing for Solar
Lender Signing MOU
Whether your project involves $2,500 worth of energy efficiency upgrades, or $2.5 million for a solar installation, Solar Santa Monica's new financial partners -- shown above signing their agreements with the program -- are available to discuss your options.

If you're a business, be ready to answer these questions:

  • Do you want to own the system, or doesn't it matter?
  • Can you use the tax credits/benefits, or would you prefer to use them as part of the negotiations?
  • Who owns the building? If you lease, what are the terms of the lease?
All financing arrangements are individual. For more details, check out the Solar Santa Monica website Financing Options, or call Susan Munves directly at (310) 458-8229.

  • Statewide Solar Programs
  • "Solar doesn't happen where the sun shines. It happens where there are programs."

    Dave Wallerstein, SolarWorld.

The word is getting out about Solar Santa Monica, one of the few city-sponsored "programs" in California, or for that matter, in the country. Santa Monica and EcoMotion have been invited to speak recently at a number of energy industry events about how the program began and how it is working with the California Solar Initiative.

"The goal is to transform the market," said Ted Flanigan, President of EcoMotion, the environmental consulting firm helping manage the program for Santa Monica. "But to make that happen, organizations like Solar Santa Monica have to take the lead. Other cities are watching closely to see how our demonstration project develops."

  • Setting up booth

On September 9th and again on the 12th, Solar Santa Monica and a number of its partners handed out nifty, reusable shopping bags to passers-by, and spread the word about the City's program.

"We want everyone to be looking at solar, whether it's for electricity or for heating water, or both," said Susan Munves, who heads up the program for the City.

Hundreds of bags were distributed thanks to SunPower, a solar panel manufacturer whose products are used by the program's Preferred Providers. SunPower panels have been featured in several of the case histories you've read about here in the Update.

  • Do You Rent in Santa Monica?
  • As a renter or a small business in Santa Monica, you may not be able to put solar on your roof. But, you are eligible for a separate, no-cost Energy Efficiency Tune-Up through the Community Energy Partnership. The Tune-Up crew will come to your home, discuss efficiency with you, and replace incandescent light bulbs and lamps with efficient fluorescent models, change-out shower heads, etc. To get on the list for the next series of Tune-Ups, call or e-mail Althea Osborn at the Solar Santa Monica office, (310) 458-4992.

  • Rebates for Solar Water Heating Bill Passes Assembly
  • A.B. 1470 has passed both the Senate and the Assembly, and is now on the Governor's desk. When passed, it will provide $250 million for rebates for qualifying solar hot water/solar thermal installs. The fund will be created by a 13 cent charge on gas bills.

Details of how much the rebate will be, and what you'll have to do to get it, have not been finalized. Keep an eye on this newsletter for updates.
