Solar Installers for the Program
On Wednesday, November 1, the Solar
Santa Monica team hosted a briefing for solar
installers interested in the Solar Santa Monica
demonstration project.
In the above photo,
Ted Flanigan of EcoMotion, the firm hired by the City
to
implement the program, speaks to the 19 different
companies who attended. An active Q&A period
clarified the unique features of the program, namely
the "bundling" of energy efficiency with solar, and the
concept of "fixed price packages."
The next step is to select a handful
of “preferred partners” to do the
efficiency upgrades and install PV
(photovoltaic)
or solar thermal systems on up to 50 buildings – from
residential to large commercial -- over the next two
years.

Welcome to Solar Santa Monica.
Our
goal: to transform the way we get and use energy.
In September, 2006, City Council approved
this two-year demonstration project. It aims to
bundle efficiency measures with solar systems on 50
buildings -- and to streamline the process so it's
easier and more cost-effective for all. If successful,
Solar Santa Monica will then
go City-wide!
This is our first update --
watch for a
steady stream from now on. Please feel free
to forward this email to interested friends and
colleagues, and to contact us with your questions
and suggestions.

“And the focus group said"

Early in September, 11 Santa Monica residents met
with a professional group leader to discuss a new, at
that time un-named, project aimed at putting in
energy efficiency improvements and solar panels on
roofs within the community.
Some
comments from that meeting helped shape the design
of the program:
- I like the concept. But will it be required of
every resident in Santa Monica? [Participating in
the project is voluntary.]
- Will they be using local contractors? What if
you want to use your own contractor? [Solar
Santa Monica will recommend “preferred partners”
who have the appropriate credentials and experience.]
- As everyone here said that’s done any kind of
remodeling project, it’s a little daunting. Having it all
packaged is pretty attractive. [The project is
based on standardized “packages” for apartments,
condos, single family homes and small businesses.
Larger buildings will be customized. Solar Santa
Monica will help manage each site.]
When asked, “Why would you
participate?” the most frequently cited reason
was to cut back on greenhouse gas emissions and do
something about global warming.

Barely two weeks after the marketing team was
assembled, Solar Santa Monica staffed a booth at
Free Films on the Pier as “An Inconvenient Truth”
was shown. Susan Munves (right) and the team
handed out preliminary
marketing pieces, fielded questions and collected
names to receive this e-news. Our list is now up to
around 235. We welcome new readers! Forward this

Solar Electric vs. Solar Thermal

Solar electric or photovoltaic (PV) systems use the
sun’s light to generate electricity to help run
your home or building. Solar thermal systems use the
sun’s heat to supplement or replace your hot
water heater.
