Introducing Hypnosis . . .

Patricia Casner, MA, CH specializes in conducting private sessions and small group workshops using non-therapeutic hypnotism and neuro-linguistic programming to facilitate personal growth and change. She is certified as a Practitioner of Hypnosis and NLP Master Practitioner through the American Hypnosis Training Academy in Silver Spring , Maryland . Trish is also a certified member of the National Guild of Hypnotists, Inc.  She is the author of Neuro-Linguistic Programming: Protocols for Change. Her goal is to assist clients in effecting positive change and fostering personal growth and development. Her approach is encouraging and non-judgmental, taking the point of view that clients are not "broken" and that they already have all of the skills necessary to achieve their goals and create a dynamic and passionate future. They simply need to be taught the tools with which to do it. Trish graduated from the University of Maryland Baltimore County with a bachelor's degree in Psychology in June 1989. She graduated from Towson State University with a master's degree in Counseling in January 1994. She has taught non-credit classes on NLP at Harford Community College and facilitated numerous group workshops.

 "Hypnosis & NLP"

Have you ever been so engrossed in a novel that you were unaware of someone talking to you?  Or have you been so focused on something else that you'd read an entire page and had no idea of what you'd read?  Have you ever been so deep in thought while driving that you drove right past your exit?  What you were experiencing was a self-induced hypnotic trance, an entirely natural phenomenon which we experience routinely on a daily basis.  Most forms of prayer, meditation and yoga employ the techniques of self-hypnosis.  Hypnosis is an artificially induced altered state of consciousness characterized by heightened suggestibility and receptivity to direction.  It is a state of completely focused attention to the exclusion of outside distractions and is a means to communicate with your unconscious mind and encourage the acceptance of positive suggestions.  While a hypnotist may assist you to achieve this state of consciousness, it cannot be overstated that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) was developed through the behavioral modeling of leaders in the fields of psychology and hypnotism (including Milton Erickson, Fritz Perls and Virginia Satir) and consists of a series of powerful personal development tools for understanding and changing our behavior.  These techniques give us insight into our own internal maps of reality (how we see, hear and feel about the world around us).  They teach us to access valuable internal resource states such as peace, curiosity, creativity and self-confidence, and increase our awareness of choices available to us in any given situation.  Briefly, "neuro" refers to the fact that we take in information using our five senses (our neurology); "linguistic" refers to the way in which we use language to organize our thoughts and perceptions; "programming" refers to the idea that we can change our patterns of thoughts and behaviors (the programs established in childhood) and choose how we want to experience our world by changing how we receive and process information.  This change is accomplished through a number of highly effective techniques which alter the process of how we think (as opposed to what we think).

Key elements in a session include establishing rapport (and an unconscious affinity between the client and practitioner), calibration (accurately assessing the client's nonverbal communication, as research shows that up to 93% of all communication is nonverbal), ecology (helping the client determine whether a desired change is indeed in his best interest as a whole being), accessing and anchoring a personal resource state (which can then be applied to a problem context), and the use of submodalities (finer distinctions of the visual, auditory and kinesthetic sensory modalities) to strengthen the resource state.  These methods can enhance our ability to discover, understand, and change our processes of decision-making, communication, motivation and learning, giving us a systematic means to develop and experience our maximum potential.
