The Dog Days of Summer Have Arrived
July always begins with a dazzling display of fireworks. Their explosive heat seems to also set off a flare in daytime temperatures, bringing us into the "dog days" of summer - some of the hottest, most sultry days of the season. I discovered the term is derived from the ancient belief that Sirius (also called the Dog Star) was responsible for hot weather as the star came in close proximity to the sun.

Our "dog star" Morgan. |
I try to be vigilant with my earth-bound pooch Morgan, especially with heat indexes expected to be in the upper 90's this week. Like all animals, Morgan (our 72-pound chocolate lab) needs special attention as the mercury rises. I make sure she has plenty of water and shade, and keep her inside as much as possible when temperatures enter the 90s.
You can pay tribute to your own "dog stars" with Canine Crunch dog biscuits from Apple's Bakery. Handmade with real peanut butter and wheat flour, a dozen of these treats are on sale for just $9.99 during the dog days of summer.
