The MBTA Fare Hike & Public Process

Thanks to everyone who made it to our Lunch with the Executives regarding the MBTA fare and service changes, and to the Young Professionals in Transportation for helping to get the word out about the event.

We had a full conference room on hand to hear a presentation by Charles Planck, the T's Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives. Charles explained the two proposals the T has put forward. Both raise fares and cut services, with scenario 1 relying more on fares and scenario 2 cutting back service more drastically. ABC President and CEO Rick Dimino was also on hand to provide some background on how the T has gotten to this point - more on this coming to ABC's blog next week - and to encourage the attendees to get involved by contacting their elected officials.

We here at ABC are rolling up our sleeves on this issue: surveying our members, coordinating with business groups and other advocates, testifying at hearings and on Beacon Hill, and developing a detailed position paper. In the meantime, save the date for our Business Community Briefing event on March 5, where we'll be discussing the impacts of the fare hikes and service cuts on Boston's businesses and institutions.

We're also exploring ways we can reach out directly to our members and get them involved. Look for calls to action on this issue in the coming weeks. In the meantime, check out our new blog and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates on the T.
