of the event.
In conjunction with the release of our white paper, "On the Right Track? The Future of the Massachusetts Commuter Rail," ABC hosted a panel forum on the topic - rendered all the more timely by newly opened discussions at the T and the publication of a transportation finance op-ed by ABC president Rick Dimino.

Rick opened the forum with an overview of the challenges facing the commuter rail system and the options going forward. Rick then moderated a panel discussion addressing these challenges. Our panelists' slideshow presentations are available here.
  • Joe Aiello of Meridiam Infrastructure explained the basics of public-private partnerships for transportation projects.
  • Damian Carey, who works on on the first American P3 to design, build and operate a commuter rail system, explained the behind-the-scenes work that went into procuring that contract.
  • Steve Poftak of the Pioneer Institute provided the local perspective, discussing the key questions that need to be answered before the T pursues a long-term deal.
  • Acting MBTA GM Jonathan Davis updated the audience on what the T is doing to prepare for the winter and the steps now being taken to procure the next commuter rail contract.

No matter what sort of contract the T chooses to pursue for the commuter rail, the fate of the service, and of the entire T, hinges on the public's willingness to fund the transportation system we need for smart, sustainable economic growth.
