Director's Corner: September

In this September edition of our eNews, you will find many events, outreaches and opportunities to be involved with Western Fairfax Christian Ministries. We were able to provide 1,873 school backpacks to our neighboring children in 23 schools. That is an increase of more than 700 over last year! There is no doubt an increase in the needs of our community this year, and the likelihood of that being true of food, clothing and utility assistance is evident.

We have many special events coming up this fall and we hope you can join us...the Community Walk and Zumba Day on September 29, the Annual Fellowship Dinner on October 12 and the Boy Scout "Scouting For Food" Drive on November 10. Please stay tuned for details on our Holiday Assistance Program.

We appreciate your support, whether it is volunteering your time, adopting clients during the holidays, or providing in-kind and/or financial donations.

God bless you,
melissa

WFCM Backpack Program

Helping Needy Students Succeed is as Easy as ABC!

THANK YOU!!

Because of the generosity of our churches, businesses, and individuals, more than 1,700 students will go back to school with the backpacks and supplies they need for success!

WFCM partnered with Collect for Kids (http://collectforkids.org) in a county-wide effort to ensure that the neediest children in our community receive the backpacks and school supplies they need to succeed in school. The program is made possible through a partnership with Kids R First, Fairfax County Public Schools and the numerous community-based organizations and businesses in the Fairfax County area who are working to provide supplies in a more cost-effective and efficient way.

WFCM collected 1,873 backpacks which were delivered to 23 high schools, middle schools and elementary schools in Fairfax County for students in need! Last year, we provided 1,055 backpacks for students returning to school. This year, our goal was to help 1,500 students and with your support we have exceeded that goal! Thank you to our churches, businesses and individuals for supporting our efforts!

Thank you to these churches, businesses and organizations for helping with the WFCM Backpack Collection!

Thank you especially to the many generous individual donors to WFCM who saw the need advertised on our website or in the local papers and dropped off backpacks at our offices, many of them who didn't give a name but just wanted to help!!! We love and appreciate you!

"To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the Heaven"

Time to say goodbye to our wonderful Exxon Mobil summer intern, Laura Gaul and thank her for all she did to get us through the lean summer months.

Time to say thank you all those volunteers who gave of their time this summer to volunteer with us and to all our donors who brought food through our doors that served so many families right in their community!

Time to welcome back faithful volunteers from their summer vacations and to look forward to our fall events: WFCM Community Walk and Zumba Day, our 5th Annual Fellowship Dinner and the Boy Scout "Scouting For Food" Drive.

Just as the seasons change, we are always experiencing change in the pantry. Hard to believe I started here when spring was in the air and now fall is just around the corner. God bless all the staff and volunteers who have helped me as I learn the ropes of the pantry. A special thank you to Cindy Nichols, who is still available to answer any questions I may have. I am humbled to serve the Lord with so many giving people beside me and I thank God every day for all you do to help us feed His sheep!

Celebrating 25 Years of Faithful Volunteers

"Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." - Galatians 6:2

When the trials and burdens of life gets overwhelming, God uses people to help bear those burdens. At WFCM, we celebrate the many loving volunteers who have served our clients and helped to bear their burdens in the Thrift Store, Food Pantry and in Client Services over the last 25 years. This sacrificial service and outpouring of mercy is a priceless gift to individuals in need and to our community as a whole!

Praise & Thanksgiving
  • A special thank you to all our junior high and high school students who spent some of their summer unselfishly volunteering in the Food Pantry and Thrift Store.  We look forward to seeing you back during after school during the week and especially on Saturdays! All the best to you in your new school year! :)
  • Praise God for all our volunteers who are led to serve here in the ministry. You are a blessing to us!
  • Praise God for the ongoing work of the local churches and community to fill our shelves for those in need of food. You are a blessing to us and to our neighbors in need!
Prayers
  • We pray for God's good favor and charitable responses from foundations as several food pantry grant applications go out this month. The extra funding is so useful to stock our shelves with basics that run low for clients.
  • Fairfax County schools have just reopened for the fall term. We pray for clients' children, that they will be safe on the streets and diligent in their studies.
  • We continue to pray for all who are suffering physically, emotionally and/or financially.
  • We pray for the continued health and strength of our clients, staff, Board and volunteers, as well as their walk with the Lord.
