Do you have an overly enthusiastic summer vegetable garden? Are tomatoes tumbling from your refrigerator when you open the door? Is zucchini piled perilously on every counter in your kitchen?
Share the wealth with neighbors in need this summer!
The WFCM Food Pantry gratefully accepts fresh produce from your garden. The flavor and nutrition of fresh garden fruits and vegetables is deeply appreciated by our clients. Produce can be a very rare item at our pantry, so any of your garden's abundance is a blessing on our shelves! :)

Director's Corner: July
25 Years!!!
This month marks the official 25th Anniversary of Western Fairfax Christian Ministries! For all who sent in recollections, quotes and commitments to be in our video this year, thank you so much. Please take a moment to read some of the quotes below from former board members, volunteers and partners. It truly is a privilege to serve at such a wonderful ministry. As we gear up for the upcoming fall and chock full of events, I encourage you to get "plugged into" one or more of those. As we close out our fiscal year, let me just share a few highlights:
- We served over 3272 individuals in our food pantry and with rent/utility assistance.
- We gave away more than 32,000 bags of free food.
- We graduated 20 clients in our Financial Peace University.
- We partnered with the Agency for Aging to serve 32 seniors monthly meals.
- We sold over $240,000 in goods at our Thrift Store to help cover part of our expenses.
- We gave over 1000 backpacks and over 1200 holiday food baskets to our community.
We could not have sustained 25 years of serving the neediest families in western Fairfax County without support from local churches, our local Boy Scouts, businesses and individuals like you.
We hope you will join us on the journey for our next 25 years.
God bless you,
Melissa M. Jansen
WFCM Executive Director

Reflections
"In the five years that I served at WFCM I was constantly humbled how the Lord would always meet WFCM's needs. He would send the most wonderful volunteers and staff to fulfill every mission that He would have us do. Even in the face of adversity He was there. The proof is still here today. WFCM is meeting even more community needs and His hand continues to stretch out through it. WFCM has been and always will be His medium. It was a privilege to serve Him through the works of WFCM. Blessings to you and all that you do."
- Dorothy Fonow (former Executive Director)
"I was on the Board of Directors when WFCM faced serious financial challenges. The Board had to make very difficult decisions and one option was to close the doors. It was the commitment to the community and the clients that made the decision to fight through the challenges and steady the boat that led the board to make the right choice. WFCM, its board and its staff have continued to make inroads in combatting the devastating effects of poverty in our community and in living their faith each and every day."
- Karen Dolan (former Board member)
"Winston Churchill said: `you make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give.' For 25 years, WFCM in the name of Jesus Christ and for the glory of God has been giving to the Western Fairfax community and as a result thereof has made an incredible difference in the lives of so many people. Too many residences of Northern Virginia do not want to acknowledge that the poor and downtrodden live among us and do many of the lesser paid jobs that are necessary for this community to prosper. For so many of them who are in difficulty circumstances WFCM has been the answer to their needs because regardless of race, color, creed, sex or national origin WFCM has reached out to help those who are less fortunate.
WFCM has lived the teachings of Jesus Christ that you should do unto others as you would have them do unto you and God will enable as yourself.
At no time has WFCM ever sought recognition for the incredible work that they have performed in our community because to WFCM and all of those who have been involved to God belongs all of the glory. It was once said that humility is the greatest trait of a human and there is no question that WFCM and its volunteers, professional staff and supporters demonstrate humility everyday of their lives.
I sincerely enjoyed my opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors of WFCM and to work with Melissa Jansen, Executive Director. I continue to support WFCM both financially and spiritually, and I will always support this wonderful organization."
- William L. Schmidt (former Board member)
"Chantilly Bible Church appreciates having a partner like WFCM that understands the best help we can ever give people is showing them how to receive the free gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. That starts with practical expressions of Christ's love, and WFCM's resources such as its food bank, emergency assistance, and client counseling programs allow us to stretch our own benevolence dollars and stay focused on our mission of making disciples of Christ in our community. Our close working relationship with WFCM multiplies the effectiveness of our deacon ministry and increases our confidence that we are being good stewards of God's resources."
- Jesse Pirocchi (WFCM Church Champion & PR Committee member)
"When each of the churches was doing the on-call ministry, when it was our week, the church handling the previous week would pass on a group of file boxes with individual cards on each of the clients that we had helped in the past. At our church, each of the volunteers would take one or two days of the week, depending on how many volunteers we had. We would be the on-call person that got all of the requests for that day.
When requests came in, we would check the boxes to find the history of that person with their needs. At first, it was a very small amount that we could help with, but then as the ministry grew and we got other financial resources, we were able to increase the amounts. What a wonderful feeling.
We also would coordinate with other relief agencies - Salvation Army, Catholic Relief Agency, et cetera - and put together a package to pay the rent, gas or electric bills. So we were on the phone a lot working on trying to get help for individual clients.
I remember going to a dentist once to give them money for someone to have a tooth pulled. I also remember handing out $10 gas cards. That certainly wouldn't go far today!
At the end of our week, we would pass the boxes on to the next church.
It was quite a relief to have the system computerized in the end, and instead of passing on the growing number of boxes, we were just passing on a computer from church to church. It was a wonderful feeling being able to help, and I actually became friends with a couple of the people that had called in with needs."
- Bobbie Kerns (volunteer)

Pathways to Success Mentor Program Given More Funding
Western Fairfax Christian Ministries is pleased to announce that continued grant funding will allow counselors to start a year-long mentor relationship with a new group of client families. In June eight households successfully wrapped up their year of training and assistance. The Freddie Mac Foundation has approved a second award of $50,000 to use with 10 select low-income families for Pathways to Success. Parents with children under age 18, who struggle financially to remain in their housing, make a commitment to budgeting classes, regular counseling, and working on goals to reach self-sufficiency.
During the year WFCM provides training about wise spending and debt reduction, financial aid for rent and utility bills to reach stability, continuing education options and job improvement assessment, WFCM pantry food, thrift store clothing vouchers, plus referrals as other needs are identified. WFCM is thankful for this opportunity to have long-term interaction with more households, trusting that the program will affect life choices of those wanting to avoid homelessness and attain new skills.

WFCM's HTH Walks
Each year, Fannie Mae sponsors the Help the Homeless (HTH) Program to help raise awareness and funds for organizations working to prevent and end homelessness. WFCM counts on schools and businesses to partner with us to meet our financial needs through Help the Homeless Walks.
Did you know that there are 1,700 homeless people in Fairfax County? In addition to the homeless, there are 57,000 people living beneath the poverty level who struggle daily just to make ends meet so they won't lose their home and can feed their families.
Holding a Help the Homeless Walk is a good community outreach event for your school. It provides YOU several benefits including: 1) the means to support WFCM in our efforts to prevent homelessness and hunger in your community, 2) an awareness of homelessness and ways to help prevent and end it, and 3) an opportunity to feel good about yourself for helping to provide life-essential needs to some of the neediest in their community.

WFCM Backpack Program
Each year WFCM collects backpacks for the elementary, middle and high schools located in our service area. These new backpacks are provided at no cost to students receiving free or reduced cost lunches. We hope that you will join us in this backpack-only collection, as a returning partner or a first-time participant! WFCM will be collecting new backpacks from July 1 through mid-August. Backpacks should be new and without wheels. Larger backpacks for high school students are greatly needed. Please click HERE for the 2012 backpack size recommendations from schools. In 2011, WFCM provided 1,055 backpacks to Fairfax County Schools in our service area. In 2012, we will have additional requests for backpacks and have a goal of serving 1,500 students.
If you would like to learn more about WFCM's Annual Backpack Program or would like to be a school sponsor and assigned to a school to meet their needs, please contact Jennie Bush or visit our website for more information.
