1st Annual Bread & Water Campaign
In lieu of the Annual WFCM Golf Tournament, we are excited to announce a new Spring opportunity to support us...the 1st Annual Bread & Water Campaign! "Bread & Water" is a simple coin collecting campaign in which donors fill water bottles--provided at no cost to your church or business--with your donations! Your contributions will be put forward in support of our mission to provide life essential support to those needing our assistance.
The Campaign will run from approximately March-May 2012. If your church or business is interested, please contact Terri Kelly today! She will provide you with an information packet, show you a sample bottle and answer any question(s) you have about the campaign.

Director's Corner: February
Love!
It's February and you know what that means...LOVE. And "love" reminds me of partners; specifically our ministry partners.
WFCM was established 25 years ago by 12 local churches, so the first partnership we had and continue to have is with our churches--which has now expanded to over 30 churches (who support us financially, with in-kind donations and provide excellent volunteers). We also have business partners who include local grocery stores, large organizations like ExxonMobil and foundations like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, who provide funding for WFCM through grants. We also have a long-standing partnership with Fairfax County Government and network regularly with Coordinated Services, and most recently, the Division of Adult and Aging and the Sully Senior Center, as we all jointly serve the needs of local senior citizens. There are so many ways to partner with WFCM to help our neighbors in need, and throughout this edition of the WFCM eNews, you will read about some of the ways we have done that. Whether you are a church member, business owner, foundation grantor or one who provides in-kind or financial donations to WFCM, we are grateful for the partnership we have with you! I think the greatest example of love can be found in the book of 1 Corinthians, where Paul was speaking: "If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing." (1 Cor. 13:3)
Happy Valentine's Day!
God bless you,
Melissa M. Jansen
WFCM Executive Director

Partnership for Client Assistance
Recently, WFCM partnered with Clifton Presbyterian Church and Our Daily Bread to assist with reconnecting Washington Gas service to one of our families. The family consists of a mother and her adult child, both of whom are disabled. Gas service had been disconnected for two years... Along with the balance owed, there was a $350 deposit and a $45 reconnection fee that had to be paid before the service could be restored. We are happy to report that this family is also now receiving food and clothing on a monthly basis!

Client Testimony
Rayni was in a bind, needing financial help to quickly move two daughters out of a mold-infested apartment. Where could she turn...? Rayni thought back to November 2005, when she was pregnant with a second child and moving in with her mother to Centreville. "I needed help with baby items," she recalled, so she called the Fairfax County Coordinated Services office. They directed her to us. "WFCM was so kind to find me a crib and set me up with food pantry visits."
Since that time of crisis, Rayni found a good job as a legal assistant/file clerk, and with subsidized housing was managing fine raising her daughters, ages 6 and 18. But as Christmas 2011 approached, she was told her housing vouchers would stop unless she moved. The landlord had neglected promised improvements; her rental didn't pass the public housing agency's inspection. Rayni contacted WFCM, "Without WFCM I don't see how I could have moved. Leah Ann (Furr) stepped in and advocated for us," said Rayni. WFCM was able to apply United Way funding to give partial assistance for the rent and security deposit, and Leah Ann found other resources through the Housing Opportunities Support Teams network. Rayni used the funds to secure a clean, safe place, just a half mile away, so no change of school was required. Rayni's family was also offered visits to WFCM's food pantry again and was given clothing vouchers to shop at the thrift store. She appreciates the continued services from WFCM, "I'm just so thankful this group is there," Rayni said, then added, "When I'm back on my feet, I want to give to help others."

2nd Annual "Stuff The Bus"
On Saturday, February 4, WFCM--in partnership with the Fairfax County Government, Fastran, Clifton Giant, the community and an outstanding group of volunteers--participated in the 2nd Annual "Stuff the Bus" event. A bus was parked in front of the Giant at Union Mill Colonnade from 9:30am to 4:30pm, where donations were collected.
As with last year, we had another amazing turnout...3,487 pounds of food and $342 in financial donations.
Many thanks to our community partners, donors and volunteers who supported us this day. Your contributions are helping your neighbors in need!

On Tuesday, January 31, twelve seniors from the Sully Senior Center participated the Food Safety activity co-sponsored by WFCM and the Fairfax County Division of Adult and Aging. The event was held at the Chantilly Library and catered by Don Churro's Cafe. Ron Campbell from the Health Department taught individuals on Food Safety. Maureen Renault, the Vice Chair of the Fairfax County Commission on Aging, also participated in the event.

Grateful for Grant Support!
One way that WFCM partners with donors in our community to assist our neighbors in need is to seek grants from charitable organizations. WFCM is pleased to note that in the past year, we have been able to create/continue alliances with the following groups:
- United Way of the National Capital Area--$2,500 was awarded in December 2011 to use for clients' food needs during 2012. This funding will allow our staff to make bulk purchases of dairy items or other perishable food products that don't come in through regular food drives.
- Freddie Mac Foundation-- $50,000 to supplement rent and utility needs of 10 families in Pathways to Success over a full year, while using mentor counseling and budget training to help them reduce debt and become self-sufficient. The program began July 2011, and at the halfway point most of the families are ahead of their goals.
- Capital Area Food Bank-- $5,000 food credit given to the WFCM pantry, in order to fill our shelves and refrigerator units with items that are in short supply through other donor sources.
- ExxonMobil Corporation-- $2,750 was just approved for WFCM to hire a summer food pantry intern, through the company's Community Summer Jobs Program that introduces college students to non-profit organizations. This future summer hire will be a great asset to recruiting food drive hosts during our lower-supply summer months!
