BLESSED BE THE NAME OF THE LORD!
Karl came in for assistance with an electric bill. He lost his job but was able to secure a seasonal mail job. His wife is working full time. WFCM was able to pay a portion of the bill and they were able to cover the rest to avoid the disconnect. The family was given food assistance from the food pantry. We connected their 17 year-old daughter with the career counselor at the high school for higher education options. The family will stay with our services until Karl can secure full time employment.

Anna, a 20 year-old single mother, came for assistance with her utilities bill. She had been unemployed for a while and recently found a new one, but hadn't received her first paycheck. Her child's father is still living at home and trying to finish high school. During the day, he takes care of the baby while she works. Anna will receive food from our pantry monthly and clothing assistance every two months. We referred her to the SNAP outreach worker that comes two Mondays per month and also made an appointment with the WIC office. Once she begins receiving a steady paycheck, she should be able to pay her rent with the money being saved with food and clothing assistance.

Roger and Anya were referred to WFCM by Fairfax County for rental assistance. They have a newborn baby. He is working full time and she has lost her job. In addition to assisting with rent, we were able to meet with the family and get them in for monthly food and clothing assistance. We are confident of their success going forward.

Director's Corner It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Or...er...Thanksgiving. The two holidays seem to run together these days, with shopping center decorations already up and our own Christmas ornaments and wreaths for sale in the WFCM Thrift Store. In any case, this is our extra busy time, following the wonderfully successful Boy Scout Food Drive, Holiday Basket distribution, and Give to the Max Day! Thanksgiving is truly my favorite holiday of all - a time to give thanks to God - and to reflect on everything He has done, personally for me, and in the ministry. We are extremely blessed with great supporters, food and clothing donors, a talented staff and board, plus hundreds of dedicated volunteers. It is also my favorite time of year at WFCM because we get to personally distribute holiday baskets to our own clients as well as folks in the community who have children and have signed up for baskets through their schools. The smiles, hugs and full hands as they leave here with their baskets is indescribable, but rest assured it blesses me and my staff and we salute you if you are one of our faithful holiday donors. We also thank you for remembering us during the "non-holiday" times, such as the spring and summer months when our food pantry is extremely low.
For those who participated in the Give to the Max Day (November 9th) it's amazing that we were able to raise $765 in 24 hours! Thank you so much for your support. Just coming off of our Annual Fellowship Dinner, we are grateful that people did not forget about the homeless, the poverty-stricken and as Matthew 25:40 suggests, "The least of these."
As we approach our day of thanks, and our Lord Jesus' birthday, may we all be reminded of our freedom (salvation in Christ), our homes (shelter, warmth) and the meals we eat (food). These seem like basic things to meet basic needs, but many of our clients at WFCM are not so fortunate and do not take these for granted. Let's all remember them this winter, and continue to pray for them as they come for help.
Eternally grateful,
Melissa JansenExecutive Director

Annual Boy Scout Food Drive Success!
On November 12, we partnered with the Sully District Boy Scouts for a full workday, as recipients of their Scouting for Food Drive. The scouts gave approximately 55,000 pounds of food to WFCM to support our food pantry and serve our clients. Despite the cold weather that Saturday morning, many energetic volunteers at the scout location sorted, boxed, and loaded, while still many others unloaded and stocked the shelves of the pantry. Without the fervent effort of these caring people, the project could not have taken place. Thank you to each and every one!

Holiday Assistance Program The holidays are likely to be the hardest times for our clients. Throughout the month of October, WFCM has been receiving requests for holiday assistance. Our part is to provide holiday food baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas and we need your help to do this. We need your help! For the 2011 season, we anticipate that we will receive close to 1,500 requests for assistance, we would be grateful if you considered sponsoring a family this holiday season. If you are unable to make that commitment, gifts of food or gift cards to local grocery stores will appreciated! In 2010, we were able to provide 1,587 holiday baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas, thanks in full to your giving hearts! Questions or comments on the Holiday Food Basket Program? Please contact Terri Kelly or call (703) 988 - 9596.
