GOD IS GREAT!

In October, Tina was shopping in the Food Pantry with her 5 year old granddaughter in mind.  She just got custody of her "grandbaby" and says that WFCM has been a lifesaver for her, and she doesn't know how she would make it month-to-month otherwise.  Tina says, "A big burden has been lifted off my shoulders."  Plus, she says she loves coming in to shop because of the warm, family-like atmosphere of the Pantry.  Tina left WFCM this month encouraged by the assistance she received and by the opportunity to pray for her granddaughter with a WFCM staff member.

Ellen is a single mom of one daughter that is currently working with the Pathways to Success program.  Since the start of the program, she has been able to reduce her debt by 60%.  She has been making her payments on time, alleviating late fees and penalties. With the progress she has made, she has been able to open a savings account.  She has also enrolled in a 10-week certificate program that will help her find work closer to home, thus reducing her commuting expenses.  WFCM is excited with the progress she has been making and is expecting her to reach 100% of the program goals.

Lisa has been a client of WFCM for a few years now. About 4 months ago, her husband of over 30 years passed away, leaving her widowed. Not long after, her daughter, who lives here in Virginia, became ill and had to go in for testing. The doctors were suspecting cancer. Lisa had been coming to WFCM to receive food and clothing in the meantime, and had the opportunity to pray with staff members on a few occasions. About two weeks ago, Lisa came by to just express her gratitude for the support she has been given at WFCM and to let us know that her daughter is cancer free! Praise the Lord!

4th Annual Fellowship Dinner

The 4th Annual Fellowship Dinner was the best one yet! 232 people attended on October 14th, and enjoyed an evening of good food, fellowship, music, client testimonies and over $86,000 was raised in gifts and pledges to help our clients this year. Thank you to all who attended that night. If you were unable to attend, but would like to make a financial donation to WFCM, please contact  Melissa Jansen, Executive Director. Copies of our new WFCM video (7 minutes) are also available by request.

WFCM Seeking Loyal Fans to Promote 1st Annual Give to the Max Day: Greater Washington

What IS Give to the Max Day?  It's a 24-hour regional online fundraiser in support of local programs and charities!  Individuals will be asked to contact friends through social networking sources and donate to nonprofits that serve the greater Washington region. This region-wide competition aims to rally as many supporters as possible, in order to raise awareness of charitable work in the community and to solicit much needed financial support.  Thousands of dollars in incentive awards will also be handed out by supporting foundations.  The Give to the Max Day goal is to engage 35,000 people to support their favorite regional charity, raising more than $3 million in donations and grants in a single day!

Date: November 9, 2011

Time & Duration: It starts at 12:00am-not a typo-and lasts for 24 hours!

Capital Area Food Bank

The Capital Area Food Bank has just awarded WFCM $5,000 in food credit, to be utilized for purchasing any of CAFB's in-stock supplies. The credit became available October 26, 2011 and will be used over the months through September 2012. Marian Barton Peele, the senior director of partner relations at CAFB stated, "We wish to extend congratulations to your agency for being one of only a select few out of the numerous well written applications to receive an award." WFCM's pantry staff is grateful to have this resource to buy nutritious items that are either rarely donated or in short supply for clients.

Holiday Assistance Program

The holidays are likely to be the hardest times for our clients.  Throughout the month of October, WFCM has been receiving requests for holiday assistance. Our part is to provide holiday food baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas and we need your help to do this.  If you would like to sponsor a family with food for Thanksgiving, Christmas or both this year, contact Terri Kelly  or call (703) 988 - 9596.

We are expecting to receive close to 1,500 requests for assistance, so we would be extremely grateful if you would consider participating!  If you are unable to provide food, gift cards to local grocery stores will be accepted.

Annual Boy Scout Food Drive

November 12, we will be partnering with the Sully District Boy Scouts for a full workday, as recipients of their Scouting for Food Drive. In the past, the scouts have given over 50,000 pounds of food to WFCM to support our food pantry and serve our clients. As you can imagine, this huge project requires hundreds of volunteers at both the scout location as well as our office. Please mark November 12 on your calendar if you can help, and contact us to let us know you will be here.
