HEIDI'S CORNER My name is Heidi Ermlick and I am the 2010 WFCM Summer Intern!
My job involves working with the WFCM Food Pantry and community at large to help coordinate food drives. During the summer, children are out of school and that means that are shelves are hit particularly hard.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Please contact me at WFCM if you are interested in having a food drive or donating items. I can be reached at (703) 988-9656 or hermlick@wfcmva.org. A current listing of items that we need can be found in this e-newsletter and, of course, on our website at www.wfcmva.org. HEIDI'S SHOPPING TIPS:
Try buying your most used items in BULK!
Buy store brand instead of brand name!
If your store has a bonus card, sign up and start saving (but beware, some stores have credit cards instead of bonus cards)!

IMPORTANT! Food & Clothing Drives
|
| |
Food and Clothing
Drives must be on our calendar!
We appreciate your donations but ask that you
call first to help us prepare for your delivery and to ensure that there are
enough volunteers to manage the volume of incoming donations.
Food Drives are
needed during the spring and summer (April - August) months. During the winter and fall, however, less is
needed.
Our Thrift Store is currently
at maximum capacity for clothing donations, however, FURNITURE donations
(anything except padding, mattresses) are desperately needed!
Please visit our
website for a current listing of donations hours.
Thank you!

EFS Client Stories
Terry, a single mother of two children, was laid off from her job. She was receiving unemployment but not child support. Her electric bill was incredibly high due to the cold winter, and while she had paid what she could each month, her service was disconnected. We were able to work with other local organizations to have her service restored.
Lou, a single, divorced man, had shared custody of his son. He was paying child support to his former wife faithfully each month, however, he was injured at work and felt that when given the choice it was more important to provide for his child than pay for his rent and he fell behind. We assisted him with getting caught up on his rent while he healed and he has since been able to return to work full time.
Sara, a 56 year-old single woman with two disabled adult children, recently had her gas disconnected. She had fallen behind with the high utility bills over the winter; as an employee of the local school system, many days of work were missed this winter due to the bad snowstorms. We worked with other local organizations to have her gas service restored.

June's Volunteer of the Month!
As a regular long-term volunteer, Tom Yuditsky has blessed us for years! Our very own "Mr. Fix-It", he has become an irreplaceable asset to the entire organization, whether that be through food deliveries for the food pantry, furniture moves for the store or helping staff with hang office pictures. But Tom's service goes above and beyond that. The positive attitude, sense of humor and spark he brings to WFCM every time he volunteers is a joy for all of us--particularly that wit. Laughter and light surrounds him, even moreso when chocolate--dark chocolate--is involved.
Thank you for your service, Tom! We couldn't do it without you. You are truly part of the glue that keeps us together.

WFCM's Annual Backpack Drive to Support Local School Children
Each year WFCM collects backpacks for the 24 elementary, middle and high schools located in Clifton, Centreville, Chantilly, Fairfax Station and the 22033 area of Fairfax. These new packs are provided at no cost to those students receiving free or reduced cost lunches. School counselors have requested over 1,000 packs for the 2010-2011 school year. If you would like to help, please drop off your donation of a new, large-size backpack (NO WHEELS, PLEASE) any time this summer prior to August 19. The packs will be delivered directly to the schools sometime during the week of August 24. Our address is 13981 Metrotech Drive in Chantilly. Thanks so much for your support! Please contact Pam Ryan at pryan@wfcmva.org with any questions. |
