STILL IMPORTANT Food & Clothing Drives
|
| |
Food and Clothing
Drives must be on our calendar!
We appreciate your donations but ask that you
call first to help us prepare for your delivery and to ensure that there are
enough volunteers to manage the volume of incoming donations.
Food Drives are
needed during the spring and summer (April - August) months. During the winter and fall, however, less is
needed.
Our Thrift Store is currently
at maximum capacity for clothing donations, however, FURNITURE donations
(anything except padding, mattresses) are desperately needed!
Please visit our
website for a current listing of donations hours.
Thank you!

April's Volunteer of the Month!
As a regular long-term volunteer, Martha Kinneberg has blessed us for years! She has become an irreplaceable asset to our Thrift Store. Her positive attitude and love of her fellow sisters and brothers in Christ make her a positive addition to the core volunteer team at WFCM. Recently she has taken on a more senior volunteer role as a trainer and mentor to the new and younger volunteers. An idea person, she also shares her thoughts and fresh concepts with store management to help improve the work flow efficiency.
Martha is married with one daughter. She and her husband live locally.

Shelter House Partnership
Senior community
case manager, Elisa Holden, will be spending Tuesdays and Thursdays of each week at WFCM
in order to meet the needs of those seeking services on a walk-in basis. Shelter
House, WFCM and Fairfax County will be working together to bring
more partners on board to join the effort of ending homelessness in Region 4.
Region 2 has begun to process requests for HPRP funds. They have been serving
clients for a few weeks, and have worked with over 10 households in community case
management in that short time.

Fresh Produce Grant
WFCM is blessed once more! We were one of only eight agencies selected from a group of forty applicants to participate in the "From the Ground Up Food Grant at Claggett Farm". For the months of May through November, twice per month on Saturday afternoons, we will be able to pick up fresh produce. We will be given a minimum of four large banana boxes worth of fresh produce.
God is GOOD!

WFCM Client Testimony
One afternoon near closing time, and a woman walked into
the office without an appointment. One
of our lead EFS volunteers greeted her and let her know that the office was
closing soon, and that she needed to call in for an appointment.
She asked her where she lived and she said that she had
been living in her van for several months.
Then she said that her daughter was severely handicapped, and took a
photo out of her wallet. Her daughter
was born with serious deformities, including her face. The woman told the volunteer that the cost of
her daughter's care had necessitated her moving out of her apartment. Her daughter was in a residential home and
would live there for the rest of her life.
In fact, she had not been expected to live at birth and had defied all
the odds by surviving for 13 years.
This client had managed to have a van equipped for her
daughter's wheelchair and was spending $600 a month on her auto payment. Even though her daughter could rarely leave
her bed, she wanted to have the van prepared in case she could ever take her
out for a little while. She was living
in that van, and had no appreciable source of income or support. She spent much of her day with her daughter
at the facility where she lived, but was not allowed to stay there at night.
In addition, her car payment was soon due and she was
afraid her van would be repossessed. At
the time she came to us, she had no food, no money and no way to buy gas with
winter was approaching.
At that time, we were able to pack food for her to take
with her that would sustain her in the car for several days, as well as some
personal hygiene supplies. We gave her
information about where she could park her van at night so she would be
safe. We were able to give her a gas
card and the EFS volunteer gave her money so that she could pay for minutes on
her cell phone. It was important for her
to be able to use her phone so that she could call several phone numbers we
gave her to ask for assistance.
We gave her hope and encouragement, and promised to pray
for her. She was so grateful for our
assistance and kindness. She recently
sent a card to our EFS manager expressing her appreciation.
