IMPORTANT
Food & Clothing Drives
veggies

Food and Clothing Drives must be on our calendar! We appreciate your donations but ask that you call first to help us prepare for your delivery and to ensure that there are enough volunteers to manage the volume of incoming donations.

Food Drives will be needed during the spring and summer (April - August) months.  During the winter and fall, however, less is needed.

Our Thrift Store is currently at maximum capacity for clothing donations, however, FURNITURE donations (anything except padding, mattresses) are desperately needed!

Please visit our website for a current listing of donations hours.

Thank you!

Greetings and Happy New Year!

Welcome to the January 2010 addition of WFCM's E-Newsletter.  We provide this newsletter each month to keep you, our loyal friends and supporters, involved and aware as to what God is doing in and through WFCM, and we also use this as an opportunity to thank you for your continued prayers, volunteerism and support!
2009 Grants

As we begin the New Year, we remain extremely grateful to those foundations and organizations who supported our programs with grant funding in 2009.  They include:

  • The Philip L Graham Fund  - $30,000 for the purchase of commercial refrigerators and freezers
  • Financial Investments, Inc. - $6,000 in support of the Emergency Financial Services (EFS) program
  • Community Foundation of the National Capital Area's Neighbors-in-Need Fund- $20,000 in support for the EFS program
  • The Gannett Foundation  - $5,000 to purchase fresh milk for our food pantry clients
  • The John Edward Fowler Foundation - $10,000 in operating support
  • The Fannie Mae Foundation- Through mini-walks hosted by local schools in our service area during October and November, we were able to raise a total of $19,764.00.  These funds should be available to us during the first half of 2010.

Catalogue for Philanthropy

In a recent issue of our Ezine, we announced the exciting news that WFCM had been selected for inclusion in the 2009/2010 issue of the Catalogue for Philanthropy.  This was a huge honor for us and WFCM is already reaping the benefits.  Donations have come in from foundations who read about us in the catalog, as well as from individuals who have donated on-line.

If you have not yet had a chance to visit the Catalogue website, we would encourage you to do so.  The website address is www.cfp-dc.org.  You can view WFCM's Catalogue homepage as well as those of the 63 other non-profits selected.  Donations are accepted on-line to make giving even easier!

2009 Holiday Baskets: SUCCESS!

Thanks to all who helped ensure that all families requesting food assistance this holiday season were able to be served.  We had 625 families in need of Thanksgiving food assistance, and 775 families who asked for support at Christmas time. The outpouring of support from the community was huge, and enabled WFCM to make sure all families had food sponsors.  Special thanks to Terri Miller and St. Timothy's Catholic Church, Chris Granberg and Centreville United Methodist Church and John Hefferan and Pender United Methodist Church for going above and beyond (as usual!) in their support of this program. Thanks also go out to Bonnie Hobbs and the Centreview. It was Bonnie's article in the December 10-17th edition of the paper that really got the local community mobilized.  Checks, gift cards, and phone calls from donors caming pouring in from the day the paper was published.  Without the exposure the article provided, we may not have been able to meet our goal.  Again, THANKS TO ALL!!
