Member Advisory Boards:
Welcome to the Human Services Coordinating Council's Human Services NewsBlast.  The NewsBlast is used to routinely share information with the Member Advisory Boards about happenings in the County and opportunities for MAB input.  If you would like to submit information for a future edition, contact staff.

Human Services and Our Community Listening Session Campaign
Accessibility of services, mental health, crime prevention, and convenience of public transportation were amongst the most common concerns expressed by Sacramento County residents in HSCC's first Listening Session Campaign.  Through the campaign, HSCC visited 19 community groups to listen to neighborhood concerns and assets.

The Human Services and Our Community Listening Sessions Campaign Report of Findings discusses the findings and provides recommendations intended to assist the Board of Supervisors in understanding community issues and setting policy; encourage action by residents and community based organizations; and educate the public about issues impacting the neighborhoods within Sacramento County.

The listening sessions have and will continue to provide representatives of the HSCC an opportunity to hear directly from residents about perceived concerns and strengths within their neighborhoods.
HSCC Budget Committee Requests Your Active Participation
The HSCC Budget Committee seeks to collaborate with the County advisory boards, programs, and other interested parties in order to begin strategizing for the County's 2009-10 budget.  It is likely that budget reductions will be necessary again in 2009, while demand for health and human services will continue to increase.  Given this dilemna, it is essential for diverse groups to work together and think creatively about approaches, strategies, and priorities necessary to maintain a functional system of care and support for Sacramento County's residents.

Next Meeting:
  • Tuesday, August 5, 2008
  • 4:00 PM
  • Infusion Cafe - 1628 K Street (corner of K and 17th)

If you cannot make this meeting but wish to be involved please contact staff, and please feel free to pass this on to everyone you think may be interested in working towards solutions.

The California Endowment - Making the Budget Work for a Better California
The California Endowment is hosting a forum, "Making the Budget Work for a Better California," in Sacramento County on July 30.

"The California Endowment has commissioned an analysis of the real world effects of this proposed budget on Sacramento County and will present the study's findings at a Forum on July 30th at the Sacramento Convention Center, from Noon until 3:45 PM. At the Forum, you'll also hear an up-to-date report on the status of the budget negotiations as well as receive communications training on how to talk about budget issues. At the end of the day, you'll gather with other attendees to brainstorm on how you can be involved in local efforts to address California's budget crisis.  The forum will include a presentation of findings from an Endowment commissioned and Tim Gage authored analysis of the real world effects of the proposed 2008-09 budget on Sacramento County."

Those interested in attending can RSVP with Josia Galiett or call (510) 271-0640 ext. 120 by JULY 25th.

Member Advisory Board Updates
The First 5 Commission has recently compiled a report that is in the final stages of review, based on 177 community surveys conducted throughout April and May.  The report will be used by the commission as part of its Strategic Planning process.  The commission's Strategic Planning process will consist of a series of work group meetings to develop a draft plan in the fall.  A presentation of the draft plan will then be shown at public hearings convened by the Advisory Committee in December, and the commission will formally approve the plan in early 2009.

The Disability Advisory Committee is working with the Department of Human Assistance to better educate clients with disabilities on how to take advantage of job training programs while enrolled in CalWORKS in order to stay employed or seek employment after their children come of age.  Many parents participating in the CalWORKS program who do not take advantage of employment training opportunities are more apt to apply for SSI after their children term out of care.  Statistics show that steady employment over five years can lead to a 7% income increase above existing SSI levels, and often leads to the further personal empowerment of former CalWORKS or SSI clients.

The Children's Coalition, while taking a brief summer break, is actively working on three Critical Indicator areas chosen by the Coalition at the strategic planning retreat. Those areas are Family Economics, Child Abuse & Neglect, and Child Mental Health/Substance Abuse.  In addition, the coalition continues to prepare for the release of the 2008 Sacramento County Children's Report Card in November.

The Adult and Aging Commission has recently made some changes in their 08-09 work plan.  This information is taken from the 2008 Program of Work (POW).  There may be changes in the 2009 POW which would alter the information herein.

Goal:  Propose, support, and oversee policies and programs to promote the well being of seniors and protect dependent adults in Sacramento County.

1.  Submit an ordinance to license Room and Board businesses serving seniors in the
     County.
2.  Prepare a second supplemental report to the 2004 Senior Profile.
3.  Complete Phase 2 in the project to identify the older adult system of care.
4.  Identify legal and other resources available to grandparents raising their grandchildren
and disseminate that information, making it more readily available for them.
5.  Outreach to the community via community events and the Stop.Listen.Care. Campaign.
Maintain involvement with emergency preparedness as it pertains to seniors and
     dependent adults.

If you would like more information on any of the issues discussed in this Human Services NewsBlast, please contact us at the phone number or email listed below.  Thank you for your ongoing commitment to improving the quality of life for residents of Sacramento County.
