Member Advisory Boards:
Welcome to the Human Services Coordinating Council's Human Services NewsBlast.  We will be using the Human Services NewsBlast as a venue to routinely share information with the Member Advisory Boards about happenings in the County and opportunities for MAB input.

Consensus Reached at Finding Common Ground Forum
More than sixty individuals representing human services providers, consumers, and advisory groups converged at HSCC's Finding Common Ground Forum to generate a shared voice.  Attendees identified core issues that impact the variety of populations who utilize human services.  As detailed in the Finding Common Ground Forum Summary, participants reached consensus on four key points that - if achieved - would have a substantial impact on the quality of life for all residents, both in the short and long terms:1) Invest in prevention; 2) Maintain services for most at-risk; 3) Improve access to services; 4) Expand safe and affordable housing.  Attendees agreed to emphasize these issues as opportunities for collaboration, new programs, or general advocacy arise.  For more information about Finding Common Ground, including future efforts and networking opportunities, contact hscc@communitycouncil.org.
Childhood Obesity Prevention Plan Unveiled
Childhood Obesity Prevention PlanOn April 17, the Sacramento County Childhood Obesity Prevention Coalition (a standing committee of the Public Health Advisory Board) unveiled Creating Healthy Environments, a childhood obesity prevention plan for Sacramento County.  The plan sets a variety of goals that can be pursued in home, neighborhood, school, health care, or policy settings.  The plan also offers numerous interventions that can be implemented in every day life.  The Coalition encourages all partners to play an active role in addressing the obesity challenge that exists in Sacramento County and beyond.

Committing to Youth Success
A partnership of the Ready By 21 Coalition, City of Sacramento Office of Youth Development, Sacramento County Children's Coalition, and Sacramento County Office of Education created the Capital Region Compact for Children and Youth.  The compact outlines the supports that youth need to develop into healthy and productive adults and asks endorsers to accept accountability for creating environments that help youth succeed.  Individual and organizational commitments are being sought from throughout the region.  For more information on the Compact, visit www.ydnetwork.org.

Connecting Homeless to Services

Homeless ConnectSacramento Homeless Connect is a one day event that provides services for homeless people in a "one-stop shop" format.  The event provides opportunities for homeless guests to be linked to housing and employment programs, receive legal, medical, dental and quality of life assistance, enjoy food and entertainment, and access many other services.  The event is scheduled for May 31 from 10am-3pm at the Cal Expo - VOA Winter Shelter.  Many volunteer opportunities exist.  For more information, including volunteer opportunities, visit www.sacconnect.org.

The Sacramento Regional Transit District (RT) is updating its Transit Master Plan.  RT is seeking extensive public engagement in the update.  Interested individuals can take an online survey or attend one of numerous planned open houses.  Information can be found on the Regional Transit Master Plan website.

Governor's May Budget Revision

The Governor released the 2008-09 May Budget Revision on May 14, 2008.  With lower than projected revenues for the State, the May Revise calls for additional cuts and new revenues.  Information on the May Revise can be found on the Governor's website.  Analysis can also be found through the State Legislative Analyst's Office.

Member Advisory Board Updates
The Adult and Aging Commission (AAC) celebrated Older Americans' Month by recognizing ten outstanding seniors from our community at the May 6 Board of Supervisors' meeting.  Also, forty-nine displays have been set up throughout Sacramento County providing the history of Older Americans' month and honoring elders, including a Sacramentan of 111 years old.  The AAC is also participating in two community health fairs, in Citrus Heights on May 17 and at Pacific Rim Fest on May 18 in Old Sacramento.   These are wonderful opportunities to present information to seniors and their families as well as a time for them to voice their questions and concerns.

While the 2008 Children's Report Card will not be released until November, the Sacramento County Children's Coalition will be releasing some of the current statistics at the end of May for public review and consideration.  It is hoped that the data will be useful in planning for the 2008-09 fiscal year.

The Mental Health Board will be holding a public hearing on the Mental Health Services Act Implementation Progress Report for 2007 on June 5 at the County Board of Supervisors Chambers.  The report is available online at http://www.sacdhhs.com/MHSA.  The MHB is also co-hosting Mental Health Day on May 31 at the Oak Park Community Center..
