Member Advisory Boards:
Welcome to the Human Services Coordinating Council's Human Services NewsBlast.  We will be using the Human Services NewsBlast as a venue to routinely share information with the Member Advisory Boards about happenings in the County and opportunities for MAB input.

Finding Common Ground
The Human Services Coordinating Council is hosting a forum on Saturday, April 19 to provide an opportunity for a variety of advisory groups to discuss the County budget for 2008-09.  The forum will serve to strengthen relationships and further identify commonalities and priorities among the advisory groups.

It is especially important during difficult budget times for human services interests to work together to find creative ways to maintain the safety nets for our most vulnerable populations.

Impact of the Governor's Proposed Budget on Children, Seniors and Women
The California Budget Project produced a series of fact sheets that examine how spending reductions included in the Governor's proposed budget would impact children, seniors, and women.  The fact sheets highlight how Sacramento County would be impacted, as well as each of the other 57 counties in California.
SACOG Adopts the Draft Final Metropolitan Transportation Plan for 2035
In March, the Sacramento Area Council of Governments adopted the Metropolitan Transportation Plan for 2035 (MTP2035).  The plan provides strategic direction for improving the roads and transit system in the six-county region and invests substantial funding over the next twenty-eight years in order to proactively link transportation, land use, and air quality.  Improving the transportation system could have a significant impact on the ease of accessibility to human services facilities and services.

Member Advisory Board Updates
On April 1, the Adult and Aging Commission (AAC) presented a report to the Board of Supervisors addressing concerns of seniors and people with disabilities as they relate to disaster preparations.  The AAC collaborated with the Director of Emergency Operations on specific recommendations, which were positively received by the Supervisors.  Also, the AAC will be placing displays in 49 area locations to recognize May as Older Americans' Month.  Ten local residents will be recognized by the Board of Supervisors as outstanding seniors.

The Children's Coalition is partnering with the Ready by 21 Coalition, the City of Sacramento Office of Youth Development, and the Sacramento County Office Of Education to host a convening at the Pannell Community Center in which local leaders - including yourselves - will adopt the Capitol Region Compact for Children and Youth.  Please join us on April 28 to sign the compact.  We are hoping to have a large number of people attend to sign the compact and we encourage you to share the compact with your board of directors, local elected officials, business chambers, faith organizations and school board members and ask them to sign on as well.

The Sacramento County Childhood Obesity Prevention Coalition (SCCOPC) - a standing committee of the Public Health Advisory Board - is unveiling Creating Healthy Environments, a childhood obesity prevention plan for Sacramento County on Thursday, April 17.  The event will bring together stakeholders to begin the process of implementing the goals and strategies outlined in the prevention plan.  For more information or to join the SCCOPC in these efforts, call 447-7063 x345.
