Member Advisory Boards:
Welcome to the Human Services Coordinating Council's Human Services NewsBlast.  We will be using the Human Services NewsBlast as a venue to routinely share information with the Member Advisory Boards about happenings in the County and opportunities for MAB input.

Finding Common Ground

Sacramento County is faced with a significant budget shortfall.  The Human Services Coordinating Council believes that it is especially important during difficult budget times for human services interests to work together to find cretive ways to maintain the safety net for our most vulnerable populations.

In turn, the Human Services Coordinating Council will host a forum on Saturday, April 19 to provide an opportunity for advisory groups to discuss the County budget for 2008-09.  The forum will serve to strengthen relationships and further identify commonalities and priorities among the advisory groups.

Member Advisory Board Updates
The Alcohol and Drug Advisory Board is partnering with the Capacity Expansion Collaborative to host a symposium on Understanding Land Use and Housing For Persons With Disabilities on April 15.  The symposium is intended to create partnerships that will lead to greater compliance with laws prohibiting discrimination against persons with disabilities.  RSVP to 875-2050 or gainesda@saccounty.net.

The Disability Advisory Commission's (DAC) Programs and Services Access Subcommittee is working with the Department of Human Assistance to ensure equivalent effective services to its CalWORKs clients with disabilities who wish to engage in work participation activities.  The goal is to increase the number of clients with disabilities being successfully placed and accommodated in jobs or job training through CalWORKs/Welfare to Work programs.  The DAC recommendations address issues such as providing effective reasonable accommodations, tying medical assessments to employability issues, training staff on the needs of clients with disabilities, providing full disclosure to clients on the long term benefits of employability, and developing measurement tools.  These recommendations are consistent with the Policy Guidance on the administration of welfare-to-work programs published by the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Corrections

The County Legislative Policy Document is specific to State legislation, not State and Federal legislation, as reported in the February 5 edition of the  Human Services NewsBlast.  Also, the Adult and Aging Commission submitted recommendations for inclusion in the 2008 Policy Document.
