Approximately 400 students, parents, and educators from five schools attended the 10th Sí Se Puede Conference in Romeoville, IL, which was sponsored by Lewis University on October 4. Lewis University partnered with USHLI to integrate our Student Leadership Series into the conference program. The event focused on helping students improve their academic performance, prepare to transition successfully from middle school into high school and from high school into some kind of post-secondary education or training.
Our featured speaker was Joaquín Zihuatanejo from Dallas. Joaquin is the Spoken Word Champion of the world and a standing ovation quality motivational speaker whose unique style and powerful message has impacted audiences of all ages throughout the nation. USHLI would like to thank Martha Villegas Miranda and her colleagues at Lewis University including Multicultural Services Director Carlos Serrato and Liseth Chavez, the assistant director of admissions, for their leadership in organizing and conducting this conference and helping students in the Romeoville area to stay in school, graduate, and pursue some kind of post-secondary education or training. This was our 31st event of 2012, bringing the total number of students, parents, and professionals served to 39,768 in 19 states. The next stops for the Student Leadership Series are Corvallis, OR (10/9), Grantville, PA (10/12), Hartford, CT (10/15-16), Newark, NJ (10/17-20), Providence, RI (10/22-23), and the Bronx, NY (10/24-26).
The primary goal of the Student Leadership Series is to ensure that every Latino family has a student that is one of the following: the 1st student to graduate high school; the 1st student to enroll in post-secondary education or training; the 1st student to graduate post-secondary education or training. The USHLI 2012 Student Leadership Series officially launched February 16th and consists of Stay-in-School Rallies for middle school and junior high students, Career & College Recruitment Fairs for high school students, Regional Leadership Summits for college students, and, whenever possible, Parent Leadership Training and Professional Development events. |
