Hundreds Attend Student Leadership Series in Lansing, MI
Approximately 400 middle school and high school students in Lansing, MI attended our Student Leadership Series event on September 27.  USHLI partnered with the Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan,  which has sponsored the event for years.  The SLS event included a college recruitment fair and focused on helping students improve their academic performance, prepare to transition successfully from middle school into high school and from high school into some kind of post-secondary education or training.

Our featured speaker was Carlos Ojeda, Jr. from Philadelphia, considered by many as the best speaker in the nation under the age of 40.

USHLI would like to thank the Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan and its Executive Director, Mary Lou Mason, for this partnership which has expanded the outreach of our respective organizations, increased the number of students being served, and improved the quality of the program.  This partnership will help more Latino students in Michigan to stay in school, graduate, and pursue some kind of post-secondary education or training.

This was our 29
th event of 2012, bringing the total number of students, parents, and professionals served to 38,968 in 19 states.  The next stops for the Student Leadership Series are Romeoville, IL (10/4) and Grantville, PA (10/12).

The primary goal of the Student Leadership Series is to ensure that every Latino family has a student that is one of the following: the 1st student to graduate high school; the 1st student to enroll in post-secondary education or training; the 1st student to graduate post-secondary education or training. The USHLI 2012 Student Leadership Series officially launched February 16th and consists of Stay-in-School Rallies for middle school and junior high students, Career & College Recruitment Fairs for high school students, Regional Leadership Summits for college students, and, whenever possible, Parent Leadership Training and Professional Development events.
