Ernesto Mejia Conducts Parent Leadership Training |
In its first appearance back in Chicago since its launch on February 16, a USHLI Student Leadership Series event was held to focus on Parent Leadership Training. Attending the training were 50 parents of students attending Nathan Davis Elementary School. The event was hosted by Ms. Lucia Solis, Middle School Bilingual Teacher. Dr. Santos Garcia is the school Principal. The featured speaker was Ernesto Mejia who focused on how parents can assist their children to become better students and and how newly arriving families can acclimate themselves to a new country or school. The presentation was essentially a dialogue allowing the parents to ask various questions about how they can improve as parents and about unprecedented issues parents are encountering. The parents agreed to create a support group to include parents who had been unable to attend.
"Mr. Mejia is a very engaging speaker. He provided several examples from his personal experience that parents were able to relate to and identify with. We look forward to having Mr. Mejia return for future presentations for our students and parents." Ms. Lucia Solis. USHLI is a Chicago-based non-profit national organization. The 2012 Student Leadership Series (SLS), launched in Chicago on February 16, has served 22,600 students in 17 states to date during this calendar year, as well as 250 parents. USHLI is very grateful to our SLS sponsors, partners, and local volunteers for their leadership and spirit of collaboration and to our generous sponsors for their support. |
