The USHLI Student Leadership Series made its first high school appearance in Boston, MA at East Boston High School. An estimated 95 high school students, enrolled in an English Language Learners program, and 10 staff attended the event, which was hosted by Catherine Carney, the Chief Academic Officer at East Boston High. USHLI partnered with the Latino Leadership Council of New England that was recently organized by Dr. Dale Trevino, Director, Office of Diversity at Harvard School of Public Health, in planning the event.
The featured speaker was Ernesto Mejia who, very effectively and passionately, shared his life story to impress upon the students the importance of overcoming language barriers, being proud of their heritage, and understanding that an education after high school is not only needed but very attainable. After the presentation students were able to ask questions about scholarships, higher education, and questions about Ernesto's personal journey as an immigrant to where he is now. Multiple students expressed their gratitude and said that the presentation left them inspired and wanting to become better students.
