The USHLI Student Leadership Series made its first appearance in Hartford, CT at Capital Community College. An estimated 375 junior high, high school, and college students, parents, counselors, social workers, and administrators representing 12 schools and six agencies attended the event, which was organized by Ivette Rivera-Dreyer, Financial Aid Director at Manchester Community College.
Our featured speaker was Carlos Ojeda, Jr. who, very effectively and passionately, shared his life story to impress upon the students the importance of staying in school, improving their academic performance, preparing to transition to the next level, and taking control of their future. Ernesto Mejia's connection with the students was so powerful that many students felt convicted and cried openly. And Mena Badros thrilled the audience with his "step up" presentation.
Carlos' mother also attended the event to hear him speak for the first time in many years.
Ms. Andrea Crittenden, Program Coordinator at the Global Communications Academy, said "WHAT A CONFERENCE! Our kids were so inspired."
Dr. Wilfredo Nieves, President of Capital Community College said, "Today's USHLI student conference was fantastic! I was as inspired and motivated by the speakers as were the students." Read more...
