A 2012 Student Leadership Series event, presented by USHLI, was held in Sebring, FL last week. The Parent Leadership Training was attended by 160 parents of migrant children. The event was hosted by Redlands Christian Migrant Association (RCMA). Director of Family Services, Ivette Galarza, said "Every year RCMA, in partnership with its Policy Council Executive Committee, hosts a parent celebration in recognition of the many contributions made by parents across this ten county geographical area. This year, CoolSpeak and USHLI also joined in this partnership and provided an experience that will go down as one of the most meaningful and memorable events ever held!"

Ernesto Mejia, a nationally prominent motivational speaker and trainer in leadership development, was the featured speaker and also conducted the parent leadership session. He exhorted the students to stay in school and to break the vicious migrant cycle that keeps students in the fields instead of in the classroom, which has made migrant children the most poorly educated segment of the Latino community.
The Student Leadership Series, which may consist of a (1) Student Assembly, (2) a Career and College Recruitment Fair, (3) a Parent Leadership Training program, or, a combination of all three is designed to help students transition from middle school to junior high, junior high to high school, high school to post-secondary, and post-secondary to advanced education or training and/or career opportunities. The goal is to help create the most educated or trained generation of Latinos in the history of Latinos in the U.S. by putting a diploma and/or a post-secondary degree in every household.
