The Latino Book Fair and Family Festival, founded by award-winning actor, producer and community activist Edward James Olmos, presented an award to Dr. Juan Andrade during its 13th annual festival in Chicago in March. The award was presented in recognition of his "career and contribution to the Hispanic community." The award was presented by Zeke Montes, President of Tele Guia Chicago and the Latino Book Fair and Family Festival, who said "It is our honor and privilege to present this award to Dr. Andrade in recognition of his work in promoting education."
The award was created recently in memory of Jaime Escalante who passed away in 2009, and whose life and dedication to educating Latino youth was featured in the award-winning movie Stand and Deliver. In the movie, Escalante was played by Edward James Olmos.

In accepting the award Dr. Andrade said "It is my honor to receive this award named in honor and memory of Jaime Escalante, whose dedication to education is legendary. He was a person who taught not only math to Latino youth, but also to believe in themselves; that character and self-esteem are just as important as knowledge. That is what we at USHLI have tried to teach the 290,000 participants we have had in our programs to date, and to the 40,000 more we expect to reach in 2012.
