Lorraine Cortes-Vasquez, Aida Alvarez, Christina Martinez

Honored at USHLI National Conference

Three nationally prominent Latinas who have distinguished themselves in government, public affairs, and the corporate world were honored at USHLI's 30th national conference.

 

USHLI Logo and HeaderLorraine Cortes-Vasquez received the Cesar E. Chavez Community Service Award.  For over three decades she has served the community through various positions of leadership and responsibility including Executive Director of ASPIRA NY, Director of the NYC Department for Aging, President of the Hispanic Federation, and as New York Secretary of State.  She has also served as vice president of Government and Public Affairs at Cablevision Systems Corporation, and on the New York State Board of Regents.

Christina M. Martinez received the William C. (Willie) Velasquez Volunteer of the Year Award.  As CEO of Adelante Public Affairs and Communications, her company specializes in corporate and community positioning, government advocacy, and multi-media solutions.  A graduate of U of IL Springfield and former legislative lobbyist in the office of the Illinois Comptroller, she is now based in Arizona and annually devotes countless volunteer hours to USHLI in communications, public affairs, marketing, general and social media relations, and fundraising.

The Hon. Aida M. Alvarez received the Henry L. (Hank) Lacayo Lifetime Achievement Award.  She was the first Latina to serve in the Cabinet of the President of the United States when she was appointed by then-President Bill Clinton to serve as Administrator of the Small Business Administration and served as a Vice President in Public Finance at The First Boston Corporation and Bear Stearns.  A former award-winning journalist, she now serves on the boards of Walmart, Union Bank, and the Progress Financial Corporation.
