Rocks in Idaho
|
USHLI's 2012 Student Leadership Series continued its 3-state swing with a major event held in Jerome, ID. Over 600 students, educators, and officials from the district and the state department of education attended the event, which was held at Jerome High School. The Idaho Commission on Hispanic Affairs, under the leadership of its Executive Director Margie Gonzalez, partnered with USHLI in planning and organizing the event.

Our featured speaker was the President and Co-founder of CoolSpeak, Carlos Ojeda, Jr. from Philadelphia. CoolSpeak Co-founder Ernesto Mejia conducted three student leadership workshops attended by all the students. Representatives of approximately 10 schools in the area and recruiters from eight (8) vocational and technical schools, community colleges, and 4-year institutions also attended. USHLI President Dr. Juan Andrade was the closing speaker. Over 5,000 students attended Student Leadership Series events this week in Utah, Nevada, and Idaho.

USHLI President, Dr. Juan Andrade, said "We went to Jerome to inspire and motivate and found ourselves being the ones inspired and motivated. The students, teachers, counselors, and administrators were great and the students were especially receptive. The teachers and counselors are very supportive of the students and it shows. We were also glad to see representatives from other schools in the area that came to see and hear us and discuss the possibility of having us at their schools in the fall or next year. We look forward to expanding our outreach in Idaho and working with Margie Gonzalez and the Idaho Commission on Hispanic Affairs in organizing more events that will benefit students throughout the state."
