Two outstanding Americans will be honored at USHLI's 30th national conference, which will be held February 16-19, 2012, in Chicago.  Over 6,000 present and future leaders representing 40 states are expected to attend all or part of the conference.

 

Among the distinguished Americans to receive special recognition at the USHLI national conference is the Hon. Mickey Ibarra, President of the Ibarra Strategy Group, a government relations and public affairs firm based in Washington, DC.  In the administration of former President Bill Clinton, Mr. Ibarra served as Assistant to the President and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs.  He is also the Founder and Chairman of the Latino Leaders Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to establishing relationships and dialogue on issues important to the Latino community.  Mr. Ibarra will receive USHLI's inaugural Medallion for Excellence in Government Relations and Public Affairs.

 

Congressman Joe Baca, representative of the 43rd district in California since 1999, will also receive special recognition.  He has successfully fought against English-only and anti-immigrant legislation in the House.  Prior to his election to the House, Congressman Joe Baca was the first Latino elected to the Board of Trustees for the San Bernardino Valley College District in 1979.  In 1992 he was elected to State Assembly where he became the first Latino Speaker Pro Tem, and was then elected to the State Senate in 1998.  Congressman Baca was elected by his peers to serve as Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus during the 110th Congress (2007-2008).  He will receive the Edward R. Roybal - Henry B. Gonzalez Award for Excellence in Public Service.

 

Mickey Ibarra and Congressman Baca will be honored during the Latino Officials Recognition Luncheon at 12:15pm on Saturday, February 18.
