You are invited to witness the launch of USHLI's boldest initiative in its 30 year history - a record-setting "virtual classroom" that will transform Latino civic education, voter registration, organizing, mobilizing, and getting out the vote for years to come. The launch site will be the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Please see the invitation below for all the details and RSVP to me personally.
Project SED (Students for an Educated Democracy) has been concentrated primarily in Chicago-area high schools for nearly 15 years, providing civic education to 7,500-15,000 students during presidential, gubernatorial, and mayoral election cycles. A 2008 survey of Latino registered voters in Chicago found that 42% of Latino registered voters were 18-29 years of age, which evidenced in part the impact of USHLI's classroom-based civic education program.
USHLI is now ready to put Project SED online and make our civic education curriculum, which has worked exceedingly well in Chicago, available for students nationwide. Our curriculum will focus on the 2012 elections, including gubernatorial, congressional, senatorial, and presidential. After studying the four kinds of elections being voted on, all students will be able to vote in a Mock Election for candidates in their state. And, program participants who are citizens of voting age, or who will be of voting age by November 6, will be given the option to download a voter registration application and register to vote.
Project SED will use a multi platform approach to make civic education fun, exciting, and available to everyone with internet access. Using Facebook, texting, twitter, and email, students will expand the "virtual classroom" throughout their social network, engaging their friends to catch the latest breaking news regarding the Latino vote, listen to candidates address our issues, listen to or read the opinions of other students, track the latest polls, and keep up with the latest in political humor, which are just a few of the features being built into the model. We hope you will make every effort to join us and witness the historic launch of the boldest initiative in the history of Latino civic participation. Please RSVP to me at docandrade@ushli.org at your earliest opportunity. Please confirm if you will be attending the news conference, luncheon or both.
